i do not see myself as a christian. i was raised catholic, but the closest i've come to a chosen christian practice is attending quaker meeting for several scattered years in my 20s and 30s. but i have actually read the bible. and the cherry-picking hypocrisy of "christians" never fails to piss me off. it's been said here before: do more Matthew. the Beatitudes are Matthew 5. see also Matthew 6:19-24; 7:1,21; 11:28. i was offline most of yesterday. probably will be today, too. ✌🏻

@peachfiend - as is the case with most religions, followers cherry pick the tiny bits they like - that work in their favour, or that cover their asses. The rest is ignored, or others are told they’re ’misinterpreting’ the work. And of course, a majority of the teachings - written or by oral history - suffer through the ‘translations’ as filtered through those whose work is what was most expedient at the time. ‘Trump Bible’? Really text the length of a handbill.

@peachfiend ya know… that is a very good point.🤔 Maybe it’s because those “commandments” are much more about telling people what and how to live their lives and control them… it’s just a hunch Funny enough, I had great cousin (called them aunt) who was a nun and she would mention these frequently (the beatitudes)🩷

@peachfiend Also the "10" are not for Gentiles specifically, but inseparable from the 613. Not all apply since the destruction of the Temple. The First Christian Council (see Book of Acts) agreed that Gentiles were not under Jewish law, but the laws of Noah, and whatever Jesus said. Pharisees and Facsists now claim to be Christians.

@peachfiend I really like Kurt Vonnegut, but any take that denigrates the Jewish bible in favour of Christian stuff is a bad take. Christians picked the commandments to post because they wanted to pretend to be inclusive of Jews. Not because our scripture is inferior to their scripture.

@peachfiend one of my favorite books, so much relevance still to everything he says in it

@peachfiend they worship the Cross that killed him, not the man, and certainly not his word.

@peachfiend A curious, most common traits of abrahamic/of revelation religions is their *fixation* with hate, shame, exclusion, anger, pain and plethora of other negative emotions, as substitute for the lack of coherent, cohesive, cogent substance in their doctrine. Core values: sadism and masochism as exacerbate surrogates for spirituality There is no hate like christian love.

@peachfiend Jesus said unto him, … Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. And when asked "who is my neighbour?" Jesus answered with the parable of the Good Samaritan, showing that your neighbours include even those of different, rival nations. @blogdiva

@peachfiend Jesus is uncomfortably radical: better to use him as a whitewashed prop while quoting the old testament than to actually engage with things he said and did.

@peachfiend It's extra confusing because so many of them are lying adulterous shitheads who blaspheme their god's name daily and idolize rich morons. It's less a commandments list than a checklist for religious hypocrisy.

@peachfiend This is the strange thing. As Jews we have those 10 Commandments surrounded by explanations and ameliorations. But the Right Wing Fundamentalist Christians, who claim a later set of rules with all that Peacemakers and cheek turning stuff, only bother with the raw 10.

@peachfiend It seems the Jesus of the sermon on the mount, whose greatest anger was directed at the merchants in the temple, and who said the wealthy will never get to heaven, has been entirely forgotten in the US.

@peachfiend Methinks the average person (including the obscenely rich) don't know the difference between the old Testament and the New.

@peachfiend Jesus has *one* role in evangelical "christianity": to enable sin thru limitless divine forgiveness.

@peachfiend I often see the push for ten commandments more as a token for Christian nationalism. I don't see the same people advocating for actually teaching them (in fact, many don't seem to see much problem with their own lying, adultery, or greed). As a Christian, I think we'd be much better spending our efforts living into them than building monuments about them as weapons in a culture war.

@peachfiend I agree wholeheartedly.

@peachfiend Jeebus and the disciples were a psyop by the Romans to stir division among the Jews making them easier for the empire to manage/oppress. They Epsteined him once "mission accomplished" and his survivors got great book deals... 🤩

@peachfiend @Susan_calvin Great point! Also Donny and/or republicans actually following those commandments is a joke: Make yourself a likeness, working on the Sabbath, murder, adultery, stealing, bearing false witness against your neighbor, coveting your neighbor's strait - all✅🤦♂️

@Edelruth@mastodon.online 2026-04-16 23:14
@peachfiend Excellent point, and an even better idea
-
@libramoon@mastodon.social 2026-04-17 01:45
@peachfiend and yet it seems they demand the Ten Commandments be posted while never reading them, or maybe taking them as mere suggestions -- It's Commandments, from your God, and you can't even follow those laws you've been given

@peachfiend Just which of those Ten Commandments have those self-proclaimed Christians obeyed?
-
@naefool@mastodon.scot 2026-04-17 09:44
@peachfiend very true, they seem to prefer to ignore Jesus teachings
-
@qhstone@mstdn.social 2026-04-17 20:08
@peachfiend In fact the only part of the New Testament they quote is the Book of Revelation.

@peachfiend they love to post the 10 Commandments, but are too illiterate to read them -- obviously since they have no problem breaking them
