Would you prefer a job where: a) Work meetings are never recorded and AI notetakers are never used, but you have to take notes manually occasionally. b) Or a job where meetings are regularly recorded and are using AI notetakers, but you never have to take notes.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange AI note taking systems are bad at their jobs. They don't reliably transcribe especially with jargon filled and non native english speakers. The summaries do not capture key decisions or social nuances ( or the whole damn point of putting people together to hash things out). Who proposed the decision? Who agreed to it? Who was silent, on mute, or absent when the decision was made? What was the justification? Even "what was the actual decision" (words matter)?

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange Needs to be filed under "Why abled people should care when disabled people bring up issues"... At least at the University of California, for disabled people at UC (whether students, staff, or faculty), there used to be human notetakers for those who had that access need. It was a good work/study job for abled students to be a notetaker. But since disabled people are always seen as a risk and cost "to be managed", the moment that abled decisionmakers could fob it off to Otter .ai, they did. This compromised privacy of disabled people. But people didn't care when it was mostly happening to disabled people... Of course, as soon as the tech was available to have these AI notetakers in online meetings, abled folks began to notice. The cruel irony is that AI corps love using "accessibility" as cover for their work. But if abled decisionmakers cared about accessibility, everything would already be accessible as possible. It's not about accessibility.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange If you do not take notes yourself in either of these scenarios, I do not think you understand the purpose or usefulness of taking notes in the first place? What is even the point if you're not going to take them yourself?

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I wonder how much worse decision making is going to get at companies because people start questioning whether to speak and be recorded, or not.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I wouldn't really have a problem with being recorded in cases of meetings for documentation purposes. Automatically speech to text engines would be fine, too. But no ai and no third party service for processing. It has to be 100% in-house. I don't know why any company would like to share there internal meetings with another corporation. You can't control what is said in these meetings.

  • @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange ai note takers make mistakes, and, more importantly, taking notes means you are deciding what did and didn't happen. Because if it happened, but there's no record, then it didn't happen. Being the person who took the notes means you're the one who says what got decided. If you're not taking your own notes from every meeting you're in, you're surrendering to whoever did, and I trust Marsha from accounting a thousand times more than I trust any ai.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I prefer to let speech-to-text dictate, then I go through and summarize key points myself. The thing is, all current transcription thingies see “AI” now. They don’t need to be. Speech-to-text has been “solved” for decades. It doesn’t need GPU-intensive “AI.” My Pentium III in 1999 could do a competent enough job.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange Primarily depends if the AI note taker is already trained to recognise company-wide and project-wide terminology and can understand the context that employees understand, and if I can be sure it will capture and highlight the important parts, that I myself would have missed when taking manual notes. Then it's the matter of having the model secured, so it doesn't leave the company's infrastructure, and can be constantly trained with new data for improvements. If these can't be satisfied, IMHO there's no point in using it, and manual notes win.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange The first time a colleague used AI to summarize a meeting, it made shit up. It said someone had committed to do a particular thing, but it never happened. So that didn’t fill me with confidence. I always take my own notes anyway, and that won’t change. (Interestingly, the colleague was not concerned about the made-up shit. They still thought the meeting summary was very useful.)

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange @feisty_lemming@zeroes.ca This seems like a no-brainer to me. Why would anyone not want to take their own notes? Taking notes helps you remember and actually think about what went on. I can't imagine succeeding in a position without paying attention at meetings.

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange taking notes myself is a primary mechanism for how my brain works. Writing shit down gives me enough time to digest what I'm writing, and formulate follow up questions. AI note taking sucks, because it robs me of that opportunity, and at the same time gets basic shit completely wrong.
