@overholt@glammr.us "A human is a delivery mechanism for productivity. Once that productivity has extracted and converted into profits, the delivery mechanism has served it's purpose. What remains is organs, bones and viscera. The human is not destroyed. Its value has migrated. The body returns to the earth; the profits enter the CEO's financial portfolio."

As someone who has devoted his career to celebrating and preserving the artifactual, tangible value of books, this feels like a knife in the gut.

@overholt@glammr.us Says it all about what they think a book actually is.

@overholt@glammr.us Fahrenheit 451, AI version. Sure, you can read Shakespeare, Marx, Ray Bradbury, Little Women, the Bible... AI filtered: "Would you like me to summarize this book for you? I can do that."

Apparently the quote was shocking enough they've rewritten the post, but IA has the receipts. https://web.archive.org/web/20260720152647/https://isbndb.com/blog/print-books-sourcing-ai-training/

@overholt@glammr.us horrifying Why does "books" feel like "people's brains" ??? I see tech bros planning on selling immortality by claiming our bodies are just "delivery mechanisms for information" & some Isaac Asimov end to humanity

@overholt@glammr.us These people clearly don't understand the dfference between information, knowledge and understanding. Nor do they value the emotional resonance that comes from holding a book. These people have forgotten that humans are physical creatures, and the act of interacting with something with hands and fingers - the whole-sense experience of texture, small, sound, even taste - is of itself valuable. A pox on them.

@overholt@glammr.us Bullshit trying to sound philosophical. Which is exactly what AI is most of the time. In Logan's Run, a classic sci-fi picture, all the books had been destroyed, and people could only read summaries of them. 🤔

@overholt@glammr.us The auto-playing video of the books being destroyed, after para 2 of the story, should come with a content warning. Holy crap, I was *not* ready to have my stomach churned like that before my first cup of tea this morning. 😰
-
@kagan@wandering.shop 2026-07-30 14:50
@overholt@glammr.us “A physical book is a delivery mechanism for information.... the knowledge enters the intellectual [cycle].” Okay, so I could ask the AI model, "Give me the entire, unaltered text of $TITLE_OF_BOOK," and it would do it? It wouldn't make up some random crap that wasn't actually the original text? Yeah, I don't buy that for a moment. The *actual content* of the book has been destroyed. It's a tragedy.

@overholt@glammr.us served its purpose ... to the destroyer. 💥 Man. Treating the collection of human knowledge and art in printed books as single use is just peak capitalism. It's no wonder that same knowledge and art is ultimate being rent sought token by token, chat bubble over chat bubble, by the same mindset. The shoe fits. 👀

@overholt@glammr.us Funny, they seem to be claiming that the information is preserved, but recent copyrights claims were dismissed because the "training" is supposed to be "transformative". So which is it bubs? Is it there, or is it transformed?

@overholt@glammr.us What about the act of reading and the internal mental process of discovery and absorbtion that goes on in the human mind? What an insane comment to make. So this unique collection of words and thought processes is useless once AI has injested it? These freaks are anti-human and extremely dangerous.

@overholt@glammr.us That prose has a feeling very reminiscent of something in a dystopian sci-fi novel. I have the impression that I've read an equivalent passage somewhere, imagining an administrative type, talking about the state's system for processing humans.

@kieranmcguire@hachyderm.io 2026-07-30 16:41
@overholt@glammr.us if they truly believe that 'the value has migrated', why don't they give the scanned physical books away for free? What do they gain by destroying them? (Probably scarcity, but they won't admit that because that would reveal their true, unlikeable nature.)
-
