@overholt@glammr.us That prose has a feeling very reminiscent of something in a dystopian sci-fi novel. I have the impression that I've read an equivalent passage somewhere, imagining an administrative type, talking about the state's system for processing humans.

@owlyph@cosocial.ca @overholt@glammr.us An almost identical book destruction plan comes up in "Rainbows End" by Vernor Vinge, which I guess qualifies as mildly dystopian. I'm more reminded of the library in "Service Model" by Adrian Tchaikovsky though, and that is non-mildly dystopian. That passage about the value having migrated would be right at home in "Service Model".
