Evidence from the Netherlands shows that bike-friendly streets increase retail sales by up to 25%. Regular cycling reduces risk of chronic illnesses by up to 27%, leading to fewer hospital admissions and lower medical costs. These benefits increase with age. Cycling infrastructure must be attractive, safe and inviting to older people. Dutch cycling prevents around 6,500 premature deaths each year, saving the healthcare system €3 billion annually. https://www.irishtimes.com/environment/climat...

Reading the Wikipedia entry on Seán O’Duffy, the man that the camogie All-Ireland Final cup is called after. It’s so confused that I’d spend time I can’t spare straightening it out but luckily I’m barred and can’t #camogie

Two sculptures beside the beautiful canal bridge at Broombridge, in memory of the day in 1843 that 38-year-old William Rowan Hamilton, walking with his wife Helen, scratched the recipe for quaternions into the stone of the bridge in case he'd forget it later #Quaternions #RowanHamilton #Broombridge

Someone on the BBC World Service is asking if potatoes can actually be a complete food. Let me tell you, before the Famine, when people in large parts of Ireland were raised on a diet of mainly potatoes and buttermilk, with occasional additions of cabbage, fish and wild foods, they were big, healthy people. When the potatoes failed, terrible diseases came in; TB became endemic; during the Famine, cholera, typhus, typhoid, and malnutrition took its terrible toll

What a shame and a pity that the UK's historic censuses, which go back to 1801 and happened every 10 years after that, are not online open and free for everyone to use for research and family interest https://www.ons.gov.uk/visualisations/storyofthecensus/

RE: https://mastodon.ie/@murchadhfinn/116447015786233758 How can Europe *not* suspend an agreement with a country whose relations with its neighbours are kill-kill-kill and which is operating a policy of ethnic cleansing and land theft? This astonishes me. #Israel #EU

One of the problems with using AI - I was puzzled that I couldn't find any Ceannt women. Anyone - absolutely anyone - who filled out the form in Irish and listed her name as "Bean uí duine-éigin" - well, her surname is listed as "Bean" 😂 Its equivalent in English would be listing her surname as "Mrs" #AI #1926Census #census #Ireland
