We plan to disable the "live feeds" of the local and federated timelines on mastodon.social within in the next couple of weeks. They are already disabled on mastodon.online. While these feeds can be useful on smaller, topical or regional servers, they have limited use on larger servers like ours. The live feeds present all content on the server immediately and essentially pre-moderation, which presents a particularly poor experience to new users finding the fediverse for the first time.

Recommended follows, trending, and searching for hashtags all provide a far better discovery experience for newcomers, and we intend to improve discovery features more in 2026. Note that we do have the ability to restore live feed access to individual users, and will consider this on a case-by-case basis. We will proactively reach out to trusted flaggers to offer this in advance.

@staff@mastodon.social Is this what would have broke the 'Local' page on Tusky? It stopped showing anything a few weeks ago, but I couldn't find any announcements with them or on mastodon.online's site to indicate anything that had changed, and no settings I could find could get it working again.

@staff@mastodon.social good decision. the magic of decentralized social is that you only have to see what you choose to, like the web. if somebody was trying to decide whether to leave AOL in the early 90s and looked at a feed of all the websites then being created to decide (hate sites included), it would deter them and not help them understand the experience of "web surfing" or what searching would turn up etc.

@staff@mastodon.social "While these feeds can be useful on smaller, topical or regional servers, they have limited use on larger servers like ours." Maybe, just maybe: 1) @Mastodon@mastodon.social shouldn't be so gargantuan in the first place, and 2) Maybe y'all shouldn't be directing every possible newcomer within your grasp *to* Mastodon dot Social? Ya think? Nah, how silly of me Whatever am I even thinking? #Mastodon #MaxiFedi #Fediverse

@staff@mastodon.social no longer a newcomer here and missing both the local and federated feeds. Would love to have them back. When I was a newcomer I didn't mind unmoderated content on those. Didn't expect moderation at the firehose.

@staff@mastodon.social So, how can then new people discover who they should follow ? That seems quite an anti-feature and disabling it will do way more damage than good. Just try to answer the questions: 1. If I am new here, how do I know who posts things that I may be interested in ? 2. If I am new here, how do I find out what hashtags I have to follow ? 3. If I am new here how do I see what people are talking about ? So, no. That is a really really bad idea !!!

@staff@mastodon.social *sigh*. I guess I missed an announcement on online when you disabled the feeds. I have spent days trying to figure out why the client I use was failing on them. Did you also do something to trending? My client now only returns a smallish number of trending articles rather than the apparently endless stream it did before. I am disappointed to lose the federated feed. I find it a far more interesting form of discovery than trending. Please reenable it at least optionally

@staff@mastodon.social I'm asking generally, as I'm aware what you just said doesn't impact my instance. "Disable the live feeds of" - There's a not-live feed of local and federated? Or are you disabling local and federated entirely? If there's a not-live, how does one look at that one vs the live one? I assume "federated" is the same as "global" in my client. Any idea what "Explore" would be?

@staff@mastodon.social you should stop accepting new users and tell people to go to smaller instances. The size of mastodon.social imposes a longterm threat to the decentralized fediverse.

  • @staff@mastodon.social I don't understand why it has to be this way... A live feed could be a static page of formatted activitypub data updated every 10 seconds. There's absolutely nothing that anyone wants that *requires* it to be an ever updated endless scrolling page passed through the user's personal view. But hey, restrict the usefulness of finding new users, what do I know?

@staff@mastodon.social Counterpoint. The live feeds are the best part of mastodon when starting out. This reads like its written by someone who is afraid to look at their email inbox because they 'have' to deal with it all and its overwhelming. Small servers its the only way to get any decent live feel. Large ones actually start to get some variety, especially when you're new and havent found many to explicitly follow. This is a poorly thought out decision.

@staff@mastodon.social could I ask a clarifying question... is the intent to disable the two timelines by default but allow individual users to re-enable; or to disable entirely without any option to re-enable?

@staff@mastodon.social Limiting access or options to access information is not a good way to proceed. It takes away from the 'open' nature of the fediverse and the web in general.

@staff@mastodon.social I disagree with this entirely. You need to know what tags to look for to even guess if they exist. Getting to see items that people post in the wild helps people decide who’s worth following and better yet seeing everything and everyone out there on the fediverse. I really hope you backtrack on this and if you don’t really hope you don’t disable it for any other instances that want to keep using it. Really really disappointed…..

@staff@mastodon.social but I liked the sheer mass of everything in one place all at once, that way I didn't have to follow anything in particular. That kinda talk about "we want to curate your feed for you" is the exact fascist techno babble many of us are moving away from. I want to have a feed bukkake on my eyeballs with no chill filter, or screen.

@staff@mastodon.social These views were optional. New users could ignore them if they wanted. I'd like both the local and global views restored for me, if possible. I‌ relied on the serendipity these views availed as a window to the Fediverse, allowing the discovery of new people, interests that I‌ couldn't search for because I probably don't know about; ones that are not necessarily trending. I would have understood a scaling justification, though. #restoreTheWorldStream

@staff@mastodon.social if this is about spam that flies all the time within federated global feed then you've pick a really bad way to combat it. because now it feels like there's no more than 100 people everywhere. that gives even worse feeling than stream which doesn't stop producing content. as some other users said, an option to show these streams should be available within preferences. arbitrary removing this feature bears strong corporate-style thinking and decision making
