Here are the SFTP credentials to upload the files you have, which were generated by the client's SSG." "You don't understand. I need to upload the site; I need the DevOps procedure." "No, you don't understand. It's generated by BSSG; all you have to do is upload the output via SFTP into the FreeBSD jail and the deploy is automatic." Silence. "But how d...

One of the reasons I often order pizza when I eat out is that, in Italy, pizza is considered an art form. Every "pizzaiolo" has their own dough recipe, their own yeast, their own technique. No two pizzas made by the same pizzaiolo will ever be exactly alike, yet they will still carry a recognisable signature. Two different "pizzaioli" may make two pizzas that look similar, yet are profoundly different. It is the beauty of imperfection, of unpredictability, of something th...

I want to publicly thank @dch@bsd.network The FreeBSD port of littleFedi was already ready at release time, and it’s really well done. One of the peculiarities of littleFedi is that it was developed and tested first on the BSDs, then on illumos, and only later on Linux. The first public instance, my own @stefano@rpi0w.stefanomarinelli.it account, runs on a Raspberry Pi Zero W with NetBSD. I don’t think many social platforms have started out on NetBSD in recent years. #ThankYou #RunBSD #Ne...

Okay, okay. Now I've officially seen it all. Spam has reached a whole new level of absurd comedy. I've just received this at my BSD Cafe e-mail address: Hello, I recently came across the BSD Cafe website and, after running it through our AI-powered business analysis platform, I noticed several opportunities that could significantly improve your customer experience and revenue. BSD Cafe already has a strong identity, but we believe there is considerable untapped potential. Our AI c...

I like Mastodon, I really do. But it has so, so many dependencies, and updating it on illumos or OpenBSD is getting really difficult, release after release. Some dependencies are primarily distributed as binaries, or only build on Linux and macOS. It's not Mastodon's fault, but it depends on them. That’s why, in my opinion, solutions like snac, GoToSocial, or littleFedi have a reason to exist: all of this is much, much easier... #Fediverse #snac #GoToSocial #littleFedi #OwnYourData #M...

Which one, in your opinion, will be the title of the next post on IT Notes (not a poll as they're too long for a poll)? - From nonsense to perfection, the Microsoft way: systemd - How my NetBSD-powered toaster burnt my bread - From Apple to Raspberry Pi Zero W: fruit, without getting fat - I let my agents run for one month. They made a pizza with tiramisu, deleted all the recipes, then denied everything and hallucinated. In the end, they cooked poisonous mushrooms, but saved my life by sugg...

New rule at BSD Cafe: Do not promote AI BSD Cafe prefers to define itself by what it supports, rather than by what it opposes. We support people, open technologies, decentralisation, technological independence, privacy, user control, the sharing of knowledge, and communities where technology remains a tool rather than becoming the authority. For these reasons, we cannot support the current direction of AI and the ecosystem surrounding it. Much of today's AI technology is developed and co...

Several requests this morning. The first one: "I broke a configuration and you need to rush and fix it, because this could cause some inconvenience to one of our employees". My reply: "I can take care of it early this afternoon as it’s not really urgent and I'm busy at the moment." "It’s not urgent, but you need to do it now because this afternoon I won’t have time to deal with it". Traditional hosting company: “We had a Linux crash. Or maybe systemd. Or KVM. Possibly a kernel issue. There is also a non-zero chance aliens interfered with our servers. We’re not entirely sure what happened. Sorry for the inconvenience.” OpenBSD Amsterdam: “We had a crash. One of the OpenBSD developers looked at it and is now patching OpenBSD so it won’t happen again.” Who’s the boss now? 😎 Thank you, @OpenBSDAms@mastodon.bsd.cafe ! #OpenBSD #RunBSD #IT #SysAdmin

This afternoon, I got an email: "Our agent, powered by the best AI available, can solve all your business problems. Reply to this email and our agent will show you what it can do". Normally, I would just delete it, but I wasn't in the best mood, so I decided to reply. I wrote: "I have an insurmountable business problem: whenever I travel abroad, I don’t have access to a bidet. This causes me enormous psychological distress, to the point that my company could actually fail....

One of the signs of widespread AI use is the appearance of subtle, insidious problems that, in the past, a human eye would have caught before they ever made it into production. Here is what my Mac says. In Italian, this is a very serious mistake, the kind of error that strongly suggests a lack of human review by a native speaker, and a typical oversight when AI is used without proper supervision. Firing humans and having AI do their jobs may perhaps lead to some temporary savings, but both tec...
