i would like to call out Tixel for email crimes. would YOU assume from this message that you could not download your ticket and in fact had to get in contact with another human and help them navigate Ticketek's transfer process?

the highest praise I've ever received for a quilt was one sister stealing it from the other "because my favourite colour is rainbow, so i should have it" obviously the only solution here is for me to make another rainbow quilt #quilt #quilting

it absolutely grinds my gears that now that my mother is in aged care, so many professionals across multiple industries refer to her as "mum". Not "your mum". Just "mum". Even I don't call her that.

i laid these out while contemplating whether i have an unhealthy relationship with the fabric remnants bin at spotlight. when i came back to them, a tiny pug was standing guard - this is completely unposed.

all the things Australians complain about - mostly things being expensive - and express surprise that I'd move here given that, are ALSO expensive in NZ. and way more crap. e.g. housing - also expensive, and much much worse quality. e.g. utilities - also expensive. also breaking far far more frequently due to massive under investment. e.g. public transport - expensive and laughable, particularly in Auckland.

i need to stop thinking about work as i drift off to sleep because then i have nonsensical lucid dreams that i think are real the next day. recently: - a colleague owed me a coffee because i bought his wife some skincare thing - someone i work with only tangentially was fired and we held a memorial it needs to stop, it's getting spooky

i take malicious pleasure in simply and clearly explaining comp sci concepts to the partners of software engineers who hand wave it away as "too hard to explain" that's YOUR skill issue, actually. if you're talking about it in front of someone who doesn't know the concept, you should be able to break it down enough to explain your conversation

hard question for me: how much compsci/deep programming lore is too much for a talk at an SRE conference? some folks will love it. some folks will be overwhelmed by too many new concepts. the right amount is hard to judge. so far we're including: - turing completeness and the halting problem - event driven architecture software considerations (e.g. what is "good" in an event processing system?) - a little bit of distributed systems challenges - tree data structures - a...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@lemay/117311007832291386 this has unfailingly been my experience as well. per this thread, having a woman ask questions in a technical interview, does NOT weed out neurodiverse candidates mistakenly, because they _consistently_ apply any behaviours that might be read unfavourably

every day, i squash the urge to message my work friends to say "what if we all didn't do any work and just had a nap?" because i think i am just always more tired than they are but like... WHAT IF

apparently it's "peak only child behaviour" that i bought some art from the cute rural antique store while out on my husband's birthday outing yesterday because "only an only child would get themselves a present on my birthday" 🫠🫣

small cute colleague Aussie-isms: the whole lot of them use 🦘 to mean skip, e.g. "nothing on the agenda for this meeting, 🦘" means the meeting is cancelled

wrote the first full outline of the talk I'm giving in October and I'm so excited about it. took about 45 mins of chatting it over before we teased out all the interesting bits and pieces we'd forgotten since we actually did the work please remind me of this enthusiasm once i hit the pit of despair phase that's coming in a couple of weeks

every time I try to research embroidery machines lots of what i read starts with dire warnings about how using them for custom designs, or even tailoring the designs, requires SOFTWARE LANGUAGES OMG and unfortunately that is the part i am least worried about like, i GET IT, but also ... it feels very weird

it's embarrassing having a friend to stay and realising they get to see me how i actually live - in the scruffiest clothes i own, covered in pug fur and chip crumbs, running on caffeine and gentle frustration, locked up in my tiny office
