Now, people browsing YouTube looking for something to watch are getting a helpful video with a thumbnail and title that makes clear "this is a door closer, they are adjustable, I will show you how to slow them down" and they're going to learn a lot of cool shit if they click through. That's why I do this. And please feel free to bookmark this thread in case you'd like to educate one of the loud YouTube/video haters for me.

@TechConnectify@mas.to I for one like to have a combination of videos and articles. Or more specifically, videos that can discuss a topic in real-time with real-time demonstrations for the visual learning part of my brain so I can get an idea of how the thing works as someone demonstrates it. And more documentation-style write-ups that I can more easily reference when actually utilizing the concept just to re-jog my shit memory.

@TechConnectify@mas.to hundreds, if not thousands, of nerds will be walking around the world tomorrow, Allen keys in hand, looking for door closers to adjust. I know I am. Your videos are brilliant, inspiring and captivating in a way no article can compare to. So far they have inspired me to commit at least one questionable purchase, which I'm eagerly awaiting... Don't let the haters pull you down.

@TechConnectify@mas.to I mostly like reading rather than watching, but for the kind of videos you make the visuals are at least as important as the words. That's true of a lot of "how does it work" and "how to" videos. It turns out seeing how a door closer (or dishwasher or whatever) works can be very enlightening. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video can be worth even more.

@TechConnectify@mas.to Just dropping a note to say that I appreciate your work and very much enjoy your style of humor (the phrase “through the magic of buying two” jumps to mind). Thanks!

@TechConnectify@mas.to I really enjoy your videos, especially if they are useful, but usually my curiosity about whatever-it-is is enough to get me to watch. I ran a channel about VR stuff ages ago and I got the same crap, “this could have been an article”, yeah well it isn’t. To my mind its a fair trade, the author gets views, clicks, etc,and maybe some ad revenue or something and the viewer gets entertained and maybe learns something. That’s the deal, that’s the trade and its a fair one. The people who are complaining are entitled and more than a little pathetic.YouTube isn’t perfect but there just isn’t a good replacement no matter what anyone says, if they have some moral objection to it, then that’s on them, they don’t get the content – too bad.

I have seen videos on YouTube and thought I'd rather have read an article. But it is only when watching low quality videos I think that and not when watching one of your videos.

@TechConnectify@mas.to I felt exactly the same, when we had some of our doors replaced, it turned out 1 of them was a self-closing firedoor (working with a totally different mechanism, a strange hinge that forced the door to close on its own), since it was a self-closing fire door it had to be replaced with one, and I had to learn about door closers since that was the modern requirement. Thank you for your genuinely informative videos ❤️

@TechConnectify@mas.to "...remember that everyone has their own paths to knowledge *and* their own way to spread knowledge." I think the problem people have with video instructions is the average quality. There are too many ten-minute long videos that are supposed to tell you how to deal with a 1-minute long issue. And they do this, because that's what the algorithm boosts. Loved your video, by the way. I had zero interest in the subject before the video started, but it was still engaging.

@TechConnectify@mas.to I'm going to "Yes and" this to say that with the state of SEO today, most of the how-to articles you get from major search engines are absolute garbage in a way that how-to videos on YouTube aren't.
-
@sockpuppet5@gnulinux.social 2024-08-22 23:27
@TechConnectify@mas.to There's plenty to complain about "the algorithm," but I'm not aware of an equivalent for articles. I probably wouldn't have learned this if it had relied on me going to search for it. And the same goes for dishwashers and heat pumps. Yes, it pays to have a nerd on staff/in my feed.

@anniethebruce@easymode.im 2024-08-22 23:56
@TechConnectify@mas.to Yeah, it could be, and probably should be... but we need the videos too. Different people learn differently, and having a video you can lean back and just watch can be relaxing. We should have both and you do great on the video side of that. Entertaining and informative. The humidifier you convinced me to buy even though it was a dirt cheap model improved my life noticeably, especially in winter.

@TechConnectify@mas.to Y'know, maybe I'm gonna start replying to 'this could have been an article' with "yeah but imagine if it was a sonnet, now THAT'D be peak"

@TechConnectify@mas.to @Arios@meow.social I’m one who enjoys short articles being available for information and I’m sure one exists! But video content like your own gives a lot more context over how it functions and makes the content entertaining. I wouldn’t spend 20 minutes on an article about adjusting door closers, but happily watched the 20 minute video on how they work and why they work that way. Helped my brother when his truck tire was flat. Tried to read the manual on how to drop the spare but couldn’t make sense of it. Instead, finding a video on how to drop the spare made it much easier to understand. Love your content and a new Tech Connections video is always an instant watch. :gphn_heart:

@TechConnectify@mas.to Just throwing my support in here. Just because one medium is good doesn't mean another medium is bad. And not every creative person needs to work in every medium. I like having written references for things I need to refer to later, but I have a lot of trouble reading so videos are a much better way for me to learn about things! Thank you for all the effort you put into them!

@TechConnectify@mas.to Or the people (like me) who have outside doors left open by family, despite constantly being asked at to close them, who learned of a solution. Didn’t ever think to look, now planning on installing one.

@TechConnectify@mas.to Video and written word are two different things for different situations. If I want to know how to do a specific thing, I get annoyed having to watch a 10 minute video to find the 10 seconds that tell me what I want to know. But if I want to learn about a concept or invention in general terms, a video is so much more accessible than a wall of text. Especially if I didn't know I wanted to learn about it in the first place. That's why people like you or Grady are so valuable.

@TechConnectify@mas.to Random thought: Usually I prefer articles because I can scroll around and - if sub-headers are used - find the exact information I was looking for relatively quickly. On the other hand, I rarely do read random articles. But I did somewhat randomly watch your video(s) about dishwashers. While watching I realised how little I know about them. So, what I really wanted to say is: thank you, and I hope you continue doing these videos about seemingly mundane things for a long time.

@TechConnectify@mas.to I wonder if the "articles are great" people have ever searched for a recipe online. Nex time I find one of those long-winded articles that take ages to get to the point and try to sell you stuff along the way, I will sigh, exasperated, claiming "this could have been a Technology Connections video". Anyway, I love your content, they tickle my brain and scratch an itch I didn't know (or sometimes forgot) I had.

@TechConnectify@mas.to I will take it one step farther on the idea of "this could have been an article". No it couldn't have. It is increasingly difficult to monetize written works to make them sustainable. The market has voted that video presentations of information have the widest audience and are sustainable. I made a video recently where I *did* write it up as an article, linked it in the description, and still got comments saying that because people don't know what they want.

@TechConnectify@mas.to Why would people comment that a video could have been an article... that's like watching a documentary and saying "This could have been an encyclopedia entry" Technically true... but that's not what the person was making...o.O

@TechConnectify@mas.to I've been a subscriber of yours for years, and there's never been a video you've done where I did not walk away with an interesting new bit of information that I never knew I wanted to have. For that I am forever grateful of your efforts. To the Whine Brigade - you're officially invited to run outside and play Hide and Go F*ck Yourselves.

@TechConnectify@mas.to You format is more digestible to me than an article and is why you're among my favorite YouTubers. Every time I see that colorful grid cabinet thing in a thumbnail, I'm about to enjoy this. 😊️ I already knew about dishwashers and pre-wash, vut I enjoyed the video and gave it to my roommates to get them to cooperate. There has been a reduction in pulling a gross dish out of the cupboards.
