Of all the trends in cycling, the one I absolutely cannot get my head around is the fashion for loud freehubs. It sounds like you've got a spanner in your spokes, or being chased by a tin of angry bees. A well maintained bike can be completely silent. To glide through the countryside in silence on a bike is one of the greatest pleasures there is. Why would you ruin it with an energy stealing noise maker?!?!?!?!?

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st Unless you’re ten years old, in which case you just add a playing card

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st Is that on purpose? I thought it has a technical reason.

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st oh, that's what that noise is, I have been mildly curious (but not so curious as to try and find out). Is it because they don't want the extra weight of a bell (slightly sarcastically as I almost got ridden off a shared path by a group whilst on my run earlier - I had to stop dead next to a dog which was freaked out by the noise and redirected its emotions to me).

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st you can now buy an after market thingy to fix it. The fact it's being marketed as a 'watt saver' and is eye wateringly expensive says a lot about the kind of people it's aimed at. https://escapecollective.com/review-wrp-zero-drag-kit-a-silent-upgrade-for-dt-swiss-hubs/ Real question though: do you have recommendations for wheel brands know for relatively silent freehubs? Mine is pretty loud, not my choice, the wheels came with the bike, and I'm probably not swapping them out soon, but one day maybe.

  • @quixoticgeek@social.v.st TBF I mostly ride fixed these days - obvs, completely silent - and in an urban environment I can see there's something to be said for a bike that makes a bit of noise, if not a full on BRRRRR. The Brompton used to have brakes that went SQUEAL which was excellent, saying at once "I am here", "I am a bicycle", and "I am slowing down".
