Another School Flyer Just got this in the parent app, Ive truly become unhinged in that I responded immediately to the post: Ai really? Slop. I cant take it anymore. A lady at the checkout of my dr appointment yesterday had a large poster, ehem, large ai poster of herself as a queen with text on it like “phone queen” and it was so hard to stand there and not say anything. Imma get introuble at my son’s school this year, I can tell. Fuck Camino Alto, Fuck ai.

I mean staff at the school probably just wanted a nice poster and don’t have the time or skill to do it. I generally hate AI but I also wouldn’t get upset about this. As lazy as it may seem, it might be someone doing the best they can with what is available to them.

Fact is people pay more attention when it looks nice and they probably don’t have a budget and time for a graphic designer. People are getting mad just to get mad. Nobody is going to read a word doc poster and it literally takes longer to make, it’s just how it is.

The issue is that AI can actually have useful purposes, but we know that those managing it don’t give a single flying fuck about that. They only want it for the most nefarious purposes possible. We should be using AI to make nice flyers for school events, not tracking the movements and personal finances of every person. Unfortunately, since they only want to use AI to enslave us, we have to surrender all the positive things it could do. Just have the kids in the art department design the flyers.

AI used like this is basically just the modern version of The Print Shop. It was immediately obvious back then that someone used it and it gave a similar low effort feel, but nothing to get so upset about. Also consider that the school staff may retaliate against your child in ways that may not be visible to you. archive.org/details/msdos_broderbund_print_shop

Yeah fuck ai. But you’re getting angry at the smallest fish in the pond. Choose your battles.

Interesting that the thread is filled with people saying using AI to make a flyer is fine because the person making the flyer doesn’t have the time, skill, or budget to do anything more than some text and clip art. Doesn’t that argument literally apply to everything AI is used for? Isn’t AI literally being marketed as the tool to use to do the thing you don’t have the time, skill, or budget to do? Someone doesn’t have the time, skill, or budget to make a nice looking website? Just use AI. Someone doesn’t have the time, skill, or budget to make a nice looking menu for their restaurant? Just use AI. Why does that argument work here but not for everything AI is used for?

Of all the gripes you can have with AI, elementary school teachers using it to save time printing out pointless time schedules is a pretty stupid one.

  • My biology high school teather starts to use ai-gened html instead of video. And it is funny. Like some sort of games designed for pupils. It presents nothing more than the sentense on the textbook. When you use AI to demonstrate or simulate something for the class, make sure you have much more knowledge prepared and plan thoroughly. Bear in mind the iceberg principle.

Before gen“AI” this flyer would have been comic sans and clip-art images… the economic, social, and mental costs of gen“AI” obviously make this worse, but I’m not sure that would have looked any better…

My kids high school uses AI for everything this year. After talking with him he decided to try to suggest that students do the designs for posters moving forward. We haven’t heard anything back yet but I guess we’ll see. But honestly, with high schools especially — how are they not taking advantage of that fun learning opportunity with the kids?

It sucks ass, but at least it’s not a tryptophoic burrito or Riverstone’s hash browns. These waste of resources just make me mad, not sick :)

Same here The problem (at least in public schools in my country) is that those flyers are made by a teacher during their unpaid free time, so they try to get maximum result in minimum time. Before genai they would use a canva template and before canva a PowerPoint template. It always been some kind of slop. The solution would be easier: You’re a middle school so just let the kids do it during a lesson of an art or computer class… Not as “pretty” as the genai but definitely not as sterile
