RE: https://mstdn.ca/@asiny/117349641365920788 I got two of these, still saplings, doing very well in the backyard as we speak. Soil conditions are simply dreadful around my house and most things just fall over dead without a lot of work. But the two paw-paws, the butternut and sour cherry I planted two years ago are thriving! Maybe in another 10 years or so I'll be enjoying fruit from these trees - or maybe a gift to future generations.

The over-arching theme of our current era is the importance of cutting through the noise. So very, very much noise. Rebecca Watson shows how it's done when it comes to the whole Robert Kraft thing with Sheeran and Macklemore. https://youtu.be/EVm_DQl0CAY?si=FnqabXVmX298Q2pn

A rightfully pissed-off Cuban delegation packs its things and walks out while Trump calls them "a failed state that will fall". I have no idea why Venezuela didn't do the same thing earlier as he bragged about getting all their oil and "in war to the victors goes the spoils."

What's this? More hacking on Ed Sheeran? Yes, yes it is. Also, the fact that this is mostly about Green Day acts as a mind cleanser. The story of when early Green Day was told they wouldn't be allowed to perform unless they dumped Pansy Division from their tour lineup. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/fz-obBwP3nY

@ottaross@mastodon.social Lucky you! I recently read a description of him written on the fedi by a user in the UK that was very spot-on, but far too vulgar for me to repeat. 😂

I love that we have a national broadcaster. I love that they frequently make cool shows that reflect our culture. I love that they have a streaming service where you can watch those cool shows for free. I wish the government would give them more money so they wouldn't have to show ads or charge a subscription fee. I very strongly dislike that Gem uses ads served by AdChoices - a cartel of various advertisers, such as Google, created to protect their business model and give the illusion o...

ELIZA, a pychoanalysis simulation, developed in 1967 by Joseph Weizenbaum, was the first AI that - according to Alex Hanna and Emily Bender in The AI Con - broke people's brains. Weizenbaum intended the program as a method to explore communication between humans and machines. He was surprised that some people, including his secretary, attributed human-like feelings to the computer program https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA The trick was simple. Take whatever the user typed in and then re...

The nice thing about the wingers is that everything is always projection. The FBI saying that engaging in prostitution and bestiality are no longer show stoppers now has me wondering which crony Patel is looking to hire that has both of those things on their CV.

Psst. You like katsu? If so, here's some tonkatsu from Tokyo Crispy, 1600 Merivale Rd. The side of shredded cabbage in tangy dressing made an excellent combo and cut the fried heaviness of the main attraction. Yummy! Plate shown also came with white rice, miso soup and pickled daikon. Rice was rice, soup was soup, no notes. Was expecting salty, but daikon was sweet. There was also the traditional Bulldog to go with it, although the Bulldog was actually clearly not Bulldog brand, but clos...

Just typing thoughts again, stuff I'm thinking about. Two wars/not-wars, two different outcomes, two things I consider a worthy study for Canadians. Venezuela - the reasons for the economic punishment (in which we were a participating party), asserting its sovereignty over its resources and in general, closely mirrors our current reality. I would expect that if things became military it would also take the form of decapitation over outright invasion. Iran - Survivor of decapitation, the U...

One of these days I'm sure Avi will anger me over something. It comes with the territory, herding a leftist movement. That day has yet to come though. Here he is, talking head on about anti-Semitism, Israel's right to exist and the genocide in Palestine. "I focus on stopping the genocide and articulating a different view of Jewishness which actually embraces never again, for all." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDNPdMBhuqQ

Don't mind me, just amusing myself with a Monty Python style skit forming in my head, based loosely off the Holy Grail witch trial scene. Media: Mark! Is it war? Is it war, Mark? Please tell us it's a war? Carney: Well, they attacked us economically, so I guess... Media: WAR!!!!!!!!! IT'S WARRRRR!!!!!!

I see today the AG is looking for contractors to assess Microsoft's CoPilot to determine whether its genAI features are safe and ready to roll-out across the federal government. Elbows up, right? Everybody knows protecting our sovereignty starts with eliminating skilled public servants and shoveling money at a US broligarch plagiarism machine.

Onion thinks they're dong satire, but this is literally how people like Thiel / Andreessen / Musk think: Energy consumption as a metric of productivity and economic output. As provincial and federal governments starve the public system it creates strain on the doctors and nurses we depend on. "The prevailing theme was that the [health-care] system is broken," wrote co-author Kerstin de Wit, an emergency physician at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and professor at Queen’s University, who conducted the research with the Network of Canadian Emergency Researchers. It's not broken. Something happening by design cannot be called broken. Various levels...

Sending OC Transpo to field concerns from the ridership is a bit like sending front-line nurses out to ask patients what bothers them about ER visits. Feeding lambs to the wolves. In both cases the problem is political and budgetary. We need a city that is serious about public transportation as much as we need a province that believes in public healthcare. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/oc-transpo-customer-information-session-changes-9.7288513 #Ottawa

RE: https://mstdn.social/@dalfen/117009564902173088 Many governments have succumbed to corporate executive thinking, summarized by this mantra: Act in accordance with how you want things to be, not as they are. You want to be a market leader? Act like a market leader. If something is not real, just make it real through confident insistence and brute force. That's how we got Uber. In 2004 Bush II went on about reality v faith based communities. Reality was the problem. Reality demands fac...

Even on the surface of it, Boy George's new pro-genocide song is terrible. How does the Reggae beat fit with the theme? The forced rhymes, lyrics that are just silly. The IDF-supporting crowd calls it a 'hopeful' song, but everything about it is either attacking or defensive, depending on the verse. Where's the hope? We will dance again, after the enemy is exterminated? Is that hope? Mostly though, the song just drones on and on. It's empty - starts nowhere, goes nowhere. G...

US still carrying on about smoke from Canadian wildfires when half their own damn country is also on fire, along with Europe and Siberia, all caused by climate change of which they are a leader in causing and protecting the industry. From a rhetoric perspective, this kind of manipulation via redirection is very common in politics and business circles. Rather similar to projection, also similar to false flag, the guilty trying to make it look like they're on the high road. It's transpar...

CBC headline: "Canada celebrates long-awaited opening of Gordie Howe bridge without U.S." We do? This is an event worthy of a national celebration? Will there be Snowbird flyovers and fireworks? I feel bad for Gordie Howe, having his name dragged into this. Should be renamed to "Capitulation Bridge."

I see CTV is airing live coverage of the Gordie Howe bridge opening, paid for by Canada used as extortion by the US. They do nothing, pay nothing and end up owning half of it. This is why I can't be a politician. If I were PM I would have ordered the demolition of the Canadian side and just left the US side dangling over the water.

Last I checked, hacking is a criminal offense. OpenAI says their bot doing crimes was an "eye-opener." So glad OpenAI was able to enjoy a learning experience. One thing I haven't heard yet is when they'll be charged. I see this is a test of people's seriousness here. Allowing them to gleefully shrug it off is a dangerous precedent. Meanwhile everybody's acting like it was some mysterious third party: A government spokesperson said the UK's AI Security Institute...
