On replacements for my dying instance: currently leaning toward spinning up a friendi.ca instance. The big advantage to that software in particular is that it can run on a LAMP stack, and I already have several of those, so deployment and ongoing maintenance is easier than other federated server software that is designed around the assumption of nginx and systemd.

In my latest postings on Matthew Explains (free account required), I review the Hemmingway-1 "model" (actually a fine-tuning of Qwen3.8) claimed by its vendor to beat much larger "frontier" models at human-like writing. https://matthewexplains.com/11202765/ I then showed my review to Hemmingway-1 and it claimed: 1. "Hemmingway-1" is a fictional model invented for the fictional review; 2. The misspelling is a dead giveaway; and 3. It is Qwen...

Not a channel I usually have time for, but this was forwarded to me and is sort of interesting. https://youtu.be/lPdmYMHrWKg?is=8ENzn7jIM4D5sNWb One advantage to my non-YouTube video site (https://matthewexplains.com/) is that you know who is paying me, if it's you.

Will the idiocy of banning youth from social media have a hidden silver lining in that it boosts other networked communication systems that just barely fall outside the ban - such as personal Web sites and Web logs? I still won't support it, but if it causes a new incarnation of GeoCities to replace TikTok, then it's not all bad.

the amount of computation is significant that goes into the individual buying and selling decisions that cause the prices to be what they are - and determine the not-coincidentally-called weights of the securities in the index. There's a function being minimized to determine those weights, namely the losses suffered by market participants, or ideally, the inverse of their profits. Without being a neural network, an index is something very much like a machine learning model. Maybe it is on...

Gell-Mann amnesia moment: news stories about OpenAI reporting, or not, the Tumbler Ridge shooter's "posts" to the police. OpenAI runs a chatbot, not a social network. The shooter didn't "post" anything there, but had a PRIVATE CONVERSATION. We are upset because, after routinely snooping on the conversation as they do on all conversations sent through their service, OpenAI didn't record the shooter's PRIVATE CONVERSATION and take it to the police. Just lik...
