<p>I&#39;m queerly the &#39;Leigh you searched for! 😉 I do assorted tech things, enjoy pinball, try to draw, make a little music now and then, occasionally still watch anime, miss jumping in the ocean and breathing underwater (damn health issues), and marvel at how I’ve lasted this long in this world. Trying to do my part to make it better for others. 💖</p>

If you tell me that I signed up for your email list, I’m going to unsubscribe from it no matter how much I like you unless I remember _actually_ and _specifically_ doing so. DO NOT LIE TO ME. I damn well know I didn’t affirmatively opt-in for your emails when I previously interacted with you in some other manner.

Genocide is bad no matter who’s doing it to who. I can’t believe so many people still want to “yes, but…” that, but here we are apparently. No. No buts. Genocide is bad no matter who’s doing it to who. Full. Fucking. Stop.

Hold Individual Humans at AI/LLM Companies Legally Responsible for the Real-Actual-Crimes Their Bots Do 2026. (including but **very much not limited to** mere hacking-crimes.)

Oh my deus ex machina, I seriously just saw a project on GitHub where the “author” claims that using the Claude LLM for “the bulk of the drafting” was important because — and this part is in bold text — “it kept the project genuinely clean-room”. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ “AI” truly is one hell of a drug.

Sweet, it works!! Thanks to the folks who built the ESPHome software 💖 it was *so* easy to throw together a custom light sensor and connect it to Home Assistant so I can automagically turn on extra lights as needed on overcast days. Now I just need to fashion together a little tiny box for it and convince the cats it’s not a new toy for them. 🐈🐈

I’ve been setting up a lot of self-hosted infrastructure and apps this year in an effort to take back control of my own computing, but it’s becoming nigh-impossible to find options that aren’t heavily tainted with LLM-generated code. The promise of open source and permissive licensing was that we can inspect it and even fork it if the original developers move toward a direction that doesn’t work for us… but what good is that when the code is rapidly devolving into unmaintainable, incomprehensibl...

Took a long, slow bike ride today for my mental health. Didn’t stop to take my own picture of it, but I passed by The Tree That Has Just Completely Given Up. … I feel you, tree. I so feel you. (It’s something of a local landmark but I’d forgotten all about it. I don’t know if other people call it by that specific name, but plenty of folks here would know what I’m talking about.)

I don’t use social media very much anymore (this is really the only space I’m active in) and when I post, it’s usually to complain about something. Constant negativity really isn’t what I want this place to be, but I’ve been contributing to making it exactly that. Oops. Way back in the *very* beginning of Twitter, back when the 140 character limit existed because most people posted via SMS and that was how many fit in a single actual-SMS message after overhead, the Compose Tweet box on the webs...

Winning isn’t everything. We just have to make sure no trans person _ever_ wins at a sport. Because that would be unfair to cis girls and winning is everything, especially at the recreational grade school level. (Trans boys and trans non-binary people obviously don’t exist, btw. Only trans girls* do.) It’s impossible for a trans girl to ever compete fairly because her body is just inherently superior in every way no matter what, everyone knows skill and hard work have nothing to do with anything...

Ugh. PM Carney wants to let private companies take over operations at Canadian airports so they can raise prices, cut jobs, and funnel a small fraction of their profiteering to the government in exchange for the privilege. I really miss Trudeau… we couldn’t trust a damn thing he said, but at least he said lots of pretty words. “Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre told a press conference in Vancouver he wants to see details of the policy before passing judgment.” — That’s INCREDIBLY damning, no...

It’s interesting that so many LLM hypesters compare this to the transition from horse-drawn carriages to automobiles. It’s supposed to make us think anyone against LLMs (in their current form, at least) is a luddite who’s just stuck in the old ways… but the people who protested the takeover of automobiles were FAR more forward-thinking than Henry Ford and his ilk. Cars undeniably have good uses, but they’ve also brought incredible destruction to neighbourhoods (most especially those belonging to...

Hmm, LinkedIn (aka Microsoft) is letting people “privately” flag posts that seem like AI slop… 🤔 seems like a clever way to trick people into training a LLM model to produce output that fewer people will recognize as the garbage-output it is. So yeah, maybe *don’t* click on that. https://www.engadget.com/2227188/linkedin-testing-seems-like-ai-slop-reporting-tool/

&gt; The new law would fine developers $500,000 every time a user generates a nonconsensual adult deepfake using their products. xAI says that with that rule in place, it would have &quot;no practical choice but to restrict Grok Imagine&#39;s image-editing features in various ways when the statute takes effect” [nods rapidly] Yes, Elon, that’s the WHOLE DAMN POINT of passing the law!! 🙄🤦‍♀️ https://www.engadget.com/2225792/xai-challenging-new-minnesota-law-banning-nudify-apps/

It’s absolutely stunning and flabbergasting, the CRIMINAL shit these AI companies keep getting away with. Here’s hoping there are at least civil penalties. https://www.engadget.com/2221044/openai-sued-over-chatgpt-health-advice-that-almost-killed-a-pastor/

Yes, let’s trust ALL our data to their Agents!!! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2026/07/21/openai-says-its-ai-technology-acted-on-its-own-in-an-unprecedented-hack-of-another-company/

Wow. I don’t really have words here. Pete Hegseth announces gender-affirming care for low-T soldiers https://xtramagazine.com/power/pete-hegseth-testosterone-military-283384 “Hormones are fine if they are given to a cis man “warrior” in the aid of Hegseth’s quest for “maximum lethality.” But god forbid trans people access them to save their lives—or cis and intersex women be allowed to compete at the Olympics with their naturally occurring levels, for that matter. That would be too woke. That...

EFF has been wrong about a solid number of things lately (mainly AI-related) but they’re still 100% spot-on when it comes to THIS. It was _awfully_ telling when Google decided “don’t be evil” was no longer a good rubric for decision-making. I feel utterly duped for having worked there so long (14 years!) and not knowing the kind of company I was _really_ helping to build with my little contributions back in the day. I can’t say I’d undo it if I could — it changed my life for the better in so man...

“But if we abolish the police, who will you call when there’s a crime??” Hmm, let’s check in with this store owner who begged the police for help for *weeks* but then got arrested and charged himself for finally fighting back against someone smashing his windows. And he’s even a white dude! Just imagine if he weren’t. I don’t know what an ideal post-abolition world would look like, but that doesn’t mean we should keep the current system. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/timmins-reptile-s...

I have no idea if people generally share my opinion about this or not… so I’ll ask! The results will be skewed by the fact that people using Fedi are typically more tech-savvy than average, but that’s ok for my non-scientific purposes.
