It’s interesting that so many LLM hypesters compare this to the transition from horse-drawn carriages to automobiles. It’s supposed to make us think anyone against LLMs (in their current form, at least) is a luddite who’s just stuck in the old ways… but the people who protested the takeover of automobiles were FAR more forward-thinking than Henry Ford and his ilk. Cars undeniably have good uses, but they’ve also brought incredible destruction to neighbourhoods (most especially those belonging to oppressed people of colour) for the sake of building infrastructure, countless deaths every year due to the many inherent dangers, and enormous contributions to our climate catastrophe. Gee, that sounds a lot like what so-called “AI” is bringing, doesn’t it? Yay progress.

@leigh@lgbtqia.space I've also read that the transition to car infrastructure (at least in the USA) was not natural or inevitable or grass-roots; it was forced, top-down, by auto manufacturers. They lobbied for auto-favorable laws, first pushing horses and bicycles off the roadways, then with even more underhanded tricks killing off public transportation. Pretty similar to how AI is being shoved into every corner of our lives.
