I don’t use social media very much anymore (this is really the only space I’m active in) and when I post, it’s usually to complain about something. Constant negativity really isn’t what I want this place to be, but I’ve been contributing to making it exactly that. Oops. Way back in the *very* beginning of Twitter, back when the 140 character limit existed because most people posted via SMS and that was how many fit in a single actual-SMS message after overhead, the Compose Tweet box on the website featured the guidance text “What are you doing?” (or something substantially similar, I can’t be bothered to research it). And wow, that was such a better way of using so-called social media than the modern hellscape way. So I’m going to try to start a habit of answering that question here. Maybe not every day, but at least as often as I complain. And there’s no time like the present to begin:

I spent a while this morning working on some automations in Home Assistant, mainly concerning air quality. Thanks to having a WAN-less VLAN for IoT devices, I can pull various sensor data into HA without sending it to the Big Tech bros — and now if the CO2 or PM2.5 levels start climbing too much, my air purifiers and washroom ventilation fans will* bring it back down before it has a chance to get unhealthy. And almost as importantly, they’ll go back to low or off when they’re done so I don’t have a constant roar of background noise. Sweet! 🎉 * if possible. Sometimes one still just has to manually open the doors and windows, and sometimes the “fresh” air outside is made of wildfire smoke. There’s more HA stuff I want to set up but instead of giving you my to-do list, I’ll try to actually do the things at some point soon so I can include them here in Project Also Toot Sometimes About Things That Don’t Suck. 🙂
