Av rack setup with new liquid cooled silent gaming pc (including steam controllers). 8K JVC projector projecting on a 130" acoustically transparent screen (ie the speakers are behind the screen). The zoom is a single white pixel at 8k res. It would be sharper if not for the weave pattern on the AT screen. Perfectly readable UI at 10' distance. #homelab #hometheater

I've retired. It's for the second time but it will probably stick this time: https://chrisgreendevelopmentblog.wordpress.com/2026/07/14/ive-retired-from-valve-again/ #valve #gamedev I started an AMA discussion here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AMA/comments/1uyk4wf/ama_retired_from_game_and_tech_industry_after_45/

@bitinn I've implemented pow() this way on the cpu and it's efficient if you take good advantage of bit twiddling and polynomial approximation for the underlying functions

When I started my codebase a piece of nice tech was support for a logging console that could use tabs to talk to multiple running programs, connect over tcp, display not just log text but _graphics_, support animation etc. So I made a basic QT based logging terminal with these features. I'm just going to toss it. With the ability now to display graphics including real time animation in the terminal, with tabs and splits, it seems un-needed. And it can work in an emacs window too.

Wow, I was reminiscing about my old 68K asm ray tracer from the early 90s and actually found a fragment of the code in a mailing list archive from when I was at Commodore: https://graphics.stanford.edu/pub/Graphics/RTNews/html/rtnv6n1.html#art6

I just upgraded every cluster node to ubuntu 26.04. Its a mix of high end servers, old pcs, laptops, and mini-pcs. I installed ubuntu on every box to the point where you could ssh in, and then opened 12 ssh windows in tmux and used keyboard broadcast to set all of them up at once. It gives you a direct view of the relative speed of the systems at normal linux cmd line work. Because it's almost all single threaded, the high MHZ strix halo mini pcs blow everything else away. #homelab

I need to update this to my much more awesome p4 current version. I think this is still not possible to write even in c++26, without the "generate a definition for all possible numbers of template arguments" technique? #cpp26 #cpp An alternative to std::tuple that is actually zero-cost over declaring a struct, and has IMHO nicer accessors: https://github.com/aachrisg/fasttuple

Best thing about retiring from mainstream commercial videogame development? Retiring from caring much about Windows. I still have one machine for photoshop, and I want to keep my code compiling on the sad and pitiful MSVC but that computer is going to be sad, neglected, and not upgraded. I don't really understand what it's for at this point, whether you're an ubergeek or the most causal internet user. "Games" used to be answer, but Valve kind of upende...

I dont know how anyone could use a programmers's editor that doesn't include an embedded graphing symbolic calculator that can do linear algebra and vector calculus. I guess the "copilot" based ones could be said to include it. if you dont mind the slowest interface possible or care if the answers are right. #emacs

"Acoustically transparent" microperfed materials seem primitive and I'm not happy with prints using them or on cloth. I've got access to a computer driven co2 laser that could cut really small holes in fine art papers and canvases..and i have sound measurement equipment..and I can write a really high resolution blue noise generator....... seems like i should be able to do better

As the stochastic parrots run out of anything to consume except their own excreta, I wonder if there will be monetary value in large "obsolete" codebases that have never been on the internet as training data.

If you took the word embeddings from an LLM model and fed them to phylogenetic tree construction software such as MrBayes, I wonder if the results would be interesting either in terms of actual word origin or (more likely) hierarchical categorization.

I wonder just how much ethernet traffic these ryzen mini-pc's can handle? Quite a lot actually: 2x10g built in 25GB RDMA NIC card added to the pci slot. and... 2x USB-C 10Gbe NICs!! These systems have two high end USB4 ports, and Iperf3 has no problem exceeding 9Gb/s with this $99 USB NIC. I tried out the 10GB USB just out of curiosity. I'm not actually going to buy and plug in 8 of those 🙂 #homelab

Man, George Clinton landing the mothership at the NOLA Essence festival in July is hard to resist even with the insane heat and crowds. They should do it at that vegas dome, it's the only thing I could imagine that would draw me there.

I have no idea if it is the actual _best_ open source screenshot program for windows, but Flameshot certainly blows away any of the ones included with the OS (it runs on linux as well). https://flameshot.org/
