  @melioristicmarie @cashew Voluntarily, yes, forced, also yes, which is why I take the stance that I do. Why would you assume that jobs that are underpaid now, where abuse is common (wage theft, lack of protection from employers or the public, lack of adherence to safety standards, the list goes on), would suddenly become less prone to abuse after making it impossible for workers to leave?

  @melioristicmarie Calling a job “mandatory service” doesn’t change it from being an exchange of labour for money, it just means the person working is being forced into it. And who decides “the prevailing wage”? Because right now, minimum wage is the standard in a lot of cases. If your answer is the government, then how do you plan on forcing a government that (regardless of party) has been allergic to raising the minimum wage to pay out well above the current standard?

  @melioristicmarie Opting for it would be just fine, no different than any other co-op option in my opinion. As I’ve been saying, I’m entirely in favour of the option being available, in strong disagreement with it being mandatory.

  @melioristicmarie And that's where choice is a good thing, their choice in particular. If they see it as something they'd prefer to pursue, I'm all in favour of them having that sort of quality co-op option. If they'd prefer to remain in the classroom, they should have that choice as well. Ultimately, nothing's one size fits all.
