I write software, and for this crime the gods have afflicted me with opinions 🤦‍♀️

It's been pointed out to me that I should also describe myself as a traveler, due to my road trip threads, and my daily walks where I try to get photos of rabbits and other wildlife. You know, I've been stressing about what my next phone OS is going to be, as Google tries to crack down on side loading. And considering I'm also trying to get onto a #NeverSlop (rather than merely #NoSlop) stack, and figure out what that stack even contains, I think Nura is gonna be the thing if I can get it on my phone. https://social.treehouse.systems/@cas/117347732017118902

You know, I've been reading the terms #NoSlop and #NeverSlop as pretty interchangeably so far, but I think my brain just clicked on the difference between them, which is clarifying my goals to someday run an explicitly and completely Never Slop software stack on my machines. The key word is "yet" - no slop *yet.* It's easier right now to run a fully No Slop system, because it's more permissive - it allows you to include software that doesn't have a policy about LLMs, o...

RE: https://mas.to/@libreleah/117344092080724056 Libreboot being #NeverSlop is great news. With all the foundational infrastructure we've lost ground on in the last couple years, having this part a of a Never Slop software stack locked in is genuinely delightful and a breath of fresh air.

ArduinoIDE really is just such total garbage. I must have fought for two hours to get a simple demo up on a TTGO board for my wife. Absolutely unreasonable, and in the end, I got it with PlatformIO. Now PIO has its own learning curve that I was interacting with while already at peak frustration, and the VS Code part of things makes me sad, but it does have this lovely property that if you fuck around with it awhile, it actually works eventually. ArdIDE on the other hand, I've never had a n...

If anything you should be LEADING with the why. My pet conspiracy theory why they don't, is that most curricula are designed by committee and lean toward including everything that sounds like it might be useful. This lack of discretion means that most of the material IS pointless for the s...

@amarioguy@social.treehouse.systems @mcc@mastodon.social I mean I feel about modern GPUs and their intentionally prohibitive feature span the way I do about web standards: "that's a nice miracle you destroyed the ecosystem with. Undoing the damage is probably a multi-decade job and none of the normal folk will understand why feature reductions are needed. Won't stop me from patiently pushing in the right direction, though."

I've gotten really adapted to the climate, which is to say, good at heat dissipation. So now when I take a hot bath or even do the dishes, it feels like the water cools off really fast despite being initially uncomfortably hot, faster than if the water just sat there. It took me awhile to realize my body is literally playing the role of a heat pipe via my blood flow. I think I read something about how trees do this too, and don't just cool/stabilize temperatures in the area with shade....

Ah crap, I think this is the latest in the day I've ever realized I forgot to post a walk recap. And I took SO many good pictures! I'm going to be a bit selective and not share all of them, but still. It's really nice that the temperatures are going down, and I can go out at later points in the day cycle, and see the world looking differently. I also took a different route home.

I'm tired of hearing about scale from non-relational database groupies and people who work at AWS. I wanna hear about scale from those metalworkers who do forge work. Is it really the metallic impurities? What's it made of? Why does it flake off? Is it valuable to collect and recycle? Like these are the actually interesting questions here.

Okay I gotta get on the trail and properly disconnect. Normally I wouldn't even explicitly say that, because the default assumption on this kind of platform is asynchronous communication, right? But it's the kind of morning where a lot of stuff is happening, and I feel like I'm in a role like a daughter with divorced parents, all like "you tell YOUR MOTHERRR that...", just a human message passing bus. I feel like I need to set an away status for this shit, like no I need to...

Man I should not have had so much cheat food leading up to the weekly injection I have to take. It's an incredibly unpleasant tension, feeling my stomach ominously gurgling while using an alcohol pad to sanitize my ass cheek. That was a skill check for wisdom that I failed. Thankfully, not to a truly consequential degree.

I should be looking at the beautiful scenery on this walk. I check my phone every few minutes in case I missed a notification under the Do Not Disturb that keeps music flowing into my headphones. Closer to addiction than I'm comfortable. I am turning over the old trauma of reading about Justine Sacco, who made a dark humor joke about structural racism being fucked up, phrased it poorly on her way onto the plane, wasn't there to explain as Twitter tore her apart, found out her career was...

I really need to stop being an enabler when my wife gets cravings. But then I wouldn't have had my last three consecutive meals be Taco Bell for lunch, delivery pizza and an incredibly strong mixed drink for dinner, and cookies for breakfast! 🤩 💃 I do honestly not feel very great right now

Okay, so you know how the capital A used to face the other way up, because it started of as a pictograph of a cattle (or possibly goat) head? And each letter has a history you can trace, and so do the Arabic numerals? Imagine how hard Sesame Street would have gone if they taught that history. That's not just a fun curiosity, it also teaches how... *invented by ordinary people* all of our writing systems are. They weren't better than you, they were the same. You, kid scooted too close to...

Thank god we got away from the dark unenlightened ages of pop-ups and Yahoo! toolbars. I love living in better times, and regularly getting ads from my phone's primary package manager to spend my Play Points or install whatever app paid Google money expecting to get the ROI out of me.

Actually, you know what? @kde@floss.social this kind of slide is what you get when you invite speakers who think AI is the future and make it a core topic of the talk. You get the Omarchy logo being treated like an equal seat at the table, a distro which explicitly exists to soak up the funding and vice signals of fascists and entrench their presence in the open source community. This wasn't even the slide that was JUST the Omarchy logo at full-slide size. You're an extremely important...

The entire internet doesn't know me, nor do I expect them to, but I think there are some social interactions that would go smoother if people understood: I really try not to stir up angst that I don't think is actionable. If I'm agitating, I either have a call to action stated or implied, there's a lot of different things a lot of different people can do about it, or I'll disclaim that I don't have an answer (but we should come up with one as a community, which is a meta-...

Wife showed me Spies Like Us, so I wanted to show her RocketMan (1997), but I have to clarify that with a year because for some reason they made an Elton John biopic by that name in 2019 and I forgot about it, because there hasn't been a biopic with something new to say or any reason to lodge in a single person's brain since 2007 with Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. I couldn't legally drink in 2007, and they're still making these fuckers. None of which is to cast shade upon Elto...

I'm apparently in a bit of a spicy mood, and I need to temper that while reading up some summary information on Jef Raskin and the Humane Interface. There are genuinely some good ideas in there. But also, I am not surprised that LEAP could not be leveraged into anything with staying power in the free software world, despite that being a place where cult classic software can be kept on life support indefinitely by diehard fans. Take this paragraph from raskincenter.org: > The shift in mo...

The more I work in C, the more I suspect that the "ideal" function signature is: 1. Input args and output args. 2. Return value is success as a boolean. 3. Failure data is an output arg. This isn't without its own warts, and has plenty of contexts where it isn't appropriate (constant-time eval for example), but it encourages patterns of stack ownership for data, and lets you do: ``` errcode e; thing1(&e, &x, y) && thing2(&e, &a, b, c) || return err(&a...

I think there are a lot of people who are frustrated to see people call out the EFF, FSF, and even (today!) Internet Archive, for doing various dumb things that undercut the movements and values they exist in pretense of serving. I can maybe even get it a little, given that Old Twitter could be very toxic about always needing a villain of the week - the online left is not always cognizant of its ability to lolcow people. I saw a reply that mentioned me earlier! "If we stop funding the EFF,...
