The short-lived Gorsedda slate quarry. Massively capitalised in the late 1850s as the Bangor and Portmadoc Slate and Slate Slab Company, it closed by 1870. It's nature was best summarised by the words: "Everything that could facilitate the works was produced, nothing being wanted but the slate vein. There was no quarry there." #photography #slate #cymru #wales #aerialphotography

I wonder if there's anybody out there who might be visiting the National Archives, Kew in the next couple of weeks, or perhaps so close you could pop in without much bother? I'm in north Wales, and only need to look at one page from one document, the location of which within the library, even without help from staff, ought to be easy to find. I can't justify the high cost of my own in-person visit. If you can help, I can provide details of the 1898 document in question ๐Ÿ™ #history...

@nocontexttrek@mastodon.social I always found the wild enthusiasm for plastering the US flag everywhere across the country unsettling. Whilst it seems to have been meant to signify patriotism, to the outsider, it had a distinctly fascistic flavour to it. Given what is happening in the US now, and how easily it has taken hold, I wonder if this observation wasn't wildly wrong.

Dear geologists: how do I summarise the processes leading to this pattern of colours in a slate bed in north Wales? Ignore the brown stuff on the right, which is just staining/biofilm Credit given in my voluntarily-written account of a drainage adit, which cuts through this. ๐Ÿ™ #geology #rocks

#Geology help needed, please! I'm writing up a visit to a 1903 abortive slate adit in north Wales, where the quarrymen were seeking a life independent of the oppressive Lord Penrhyn. Amongst the debris on the floor was the stone shown below. If anyone can offer a description of it's geological history, I would like to include this in my write-up, with suitable credit, of course. The stone's a few cm across. #rocks
