After breakfast, I’m taking apart the player and replacing the disc in there with a CD-R with the update on it, hoping that will get it unstuck.

I’ve made it to the point where I’ve removed the optical drive without breaking anything! Interestingly, it uses a standard SATA connection rather than some proprietary flat flex cable for data. No idea if the protocol it uses is SATA though, and I don’t have the tools or energy to plug this into a PC at the moment. Maybe in the future.
