@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org One of each cable to each end of the fuse. Right as rain.

@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org @bipolaron@scholar.social ah, power over Ethernet. I’ve heard of this.

@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org your plug seems to be missing a couple pins: https://chaos.social/@itsyndikat/115147991479570126

@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org Yes. The orange one is just a spare in case you wanted to use three phase.

@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org Eh, there's always a few bits left over when you do things yourself. It's probably fine :menhera_peek:

@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org The last pair is only useful in France for connecting to the orange.com network

@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org I think you need a smaller value of fuse.

@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org the fun part is, a standards-compliant non-PoE ethernet port could survive being plugged into this at least for a few minutes -F

@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org HVoE; High Voltage over Ethernet - the next (last?) geneation standard after Power over Ethernet PoE - I guess.

@aneel@mefi.social 2026-05-16 14:37
@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org That extra conductor is only needed if you have four phase power. Since your plug only has three pins (one per phase), best practice is to split the orange pair and wrap each strand around one of the pins at the bottom. This helps eliminate “cross-talk”. Some people advocate cutting the extra wires, but if you want to upgrade to four phase at some point in the future, you’ll have to replace the entire run instead of just rewiring the plug.

@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org If the intended function is Ethernet-Destroyer, it may work w/o connecting orange wires.

@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org This is a single phase set-up. You can use the spare pair for data. Such data might include: how many milliseconds has it taken for this cable to reach its melting point?

@vogelchr@chaos.social 2026-05-18 05:05
@ThePiGuy24@meemu.org sorry, but no, this is completely wrong. CAT5 cables are exclusively to be used with four-pin 3phase power connectors, such as https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ovale_Kragensteckvorrichtung People have made this “PoE” joke already in the sub-toots, but little do they know that this was actually how PoE was invented: people realised that in addition to 22kW of electrical power they could transmit data: this was when each of L1.2.3 and PE was split in two, and 8-pin RJ45 was born! Know your IT History! ☝️🧐
