@god@tlv.cool 2023-04-30 19:52
@major@fosstodon.org I still remember how the sequence of beeps and screeches of a successful modem connection sounded like. Oh, those were horrid times! 😱

@major@fosstodon.org Now the internet comes through the smartphone and it sounds like robots screaming nonsense.

@major@fosstodon.org So true. I used to work with people who could tell the speed of the connection by the buzzing and screeches. I kinda miss that.

@major@fosstodon.org: The kids these days just can't hear the low-pitched screeching of the Internet robots.
-
@anne_twain@theblower.au 2023-04-30 22:37
@major@fosstodon.org Yep. You had to fit two rubber cups on the receiver. (Kid wonders what a receiver was.) That's part of the phone, dear. ( Kid wonders where you'd fit rubber cups on a smartphone.)

@major@fosstodon.org the problem is that all the cables today are sound insulated, and wifi waves do not have sound, so we cannot hear their constant screams for help. If only we all knew the horrors within…

@major@fosstodon.org The internet *is* nothing but screaming robots.

@major@fosstodon.org My favorite variant of that: Computers used to scream out in pain when we connected them to the Internet. We didn't listen to this warning. Now it's too late.

@major@fosstodon.org it sounds still the same way, but current day router don't use loudspeakers to tell anybody. 🫣 Could be a nice maker project.🤔

@major@fosstodon.org Ha! I knew I had seen, and boosted, this one before, recently, and here it is, from 12 days ago! Of course I boosted it from today's person, as well. It's a good meme. 👍 This is not the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last. No "breaches of etiquette" were made, and none are implied. No one "stole" anything from anybody. It's kinda silly to claim ownership of a meme once it's in the wild and reproducing, anyway. #TheArtOfShitposting

@darcher@fosstodon.org 2023-06-25 18:43
@major@fosstodon.org you might be amused to learn that we heard the screaming robots for the first time in many years yesterday, when our voice line got a wrong number call from a modem. We really wondered who it was and what they were doing, but weren't quite bold enough to dig out a modem try and contact them back.
