We live in an idiotic and reactionary age, don't we?
Most recently, a kid sadly drowned. And now a (shockingly large) group of parents is campaigning for 6ft high fences to be erected around EVERY body of water in the UK. I had to double check it wasn't some really dark satire. But no. That's what they are campaigning for.
Fuck the wildlife. Fuck the aesthetics. Fuck the practicalities or costs. Fuck the idea of responsible adults, oh, I don't know, "supervising children adequately".

Some years ago a report came to light that elderly vulnerable people were being abused in care homes. This is, of course, very bad. What was the mooing masses' brilliant campaign? CCTV in *every* room in every carehome. Me: "even the toilets?!??" Them: "ESPECIALLY the toilets". What about privacy for the elderly? Who is going to watch all these feeds? What about the costs? Autonomy? How to trust the watchers of all this private activity? When I point problems out, I'm the bad guy, though.

@bloor@bloor.tw It is sad for sure. How about teaching your kids how to swim and stay out of water when there is not a life guard present.
