Hiding stuff to teach people a lesson is potentially traumatic and not particularly… Nice? Effective?
Just beat up your children already if you cannot be arsed to parent effectively.
Edit: guess that was a bit off base. But who does this and why is this a win or something to be celebrated? This is bad and harmful parenting to me and should be condemned in an age where we know better.

Yeah, he should just tell the kid it’s awesome, buy her a new phone and empty the fucking dishwasher himself instead of forcing this grandkids into slavery!

This is bad and harmful parenting to me and should be condemned in an age where we know better. Compared to what? Quite literally in the age immediately prior to this one, the method of teaching the lesson would’ve been direct physical punishment of the go-get-me-a-switch variety.
