The three of us discussed it, and decided that rather than trying to get looked at in an emergency room in Osaka, I should go home and see our neighborhood orthopedic surgeon tomorrow. My partner thinks I might have sprained my thoracic vertebra, and my friend was inclined to agree. (I didn't know "thoracic vertebra" in either Japanese or English.) 3/4

So my wonderful friend took her own car back to her home, returned to where I was by train, and drove me an hour to my home in Kyoto, in my car, before returning to her own home by train. It's not as bad as the time I broke a couple of ribs, but it hurts to stand up, lie down, and sit up. Lesson learned: Ask for help rather than trying to carry a 55 kg pumpkin alone. 4/4
