The idea behind this comes from the intro to Ostrom's Governing the Commons. She points out that the Tragedy of the Commons happens when actors can be modeled as prisoners with no coordination. By increasing communication, we can create opportunities to shift away from the tragedy. Today, the climate crisis is very much a grand Tragedy of the Commons problem. A solution would be to build a (bottom up) coordinated carbon budget, and a community like described could be a low effort first step towards that.

Roman elites drank from leaded cups because it made water sweeter. Radiation was thought at one time to have healing properties, so people would add uranium to their drinking water. Glowing dishes are still a collectors item. After the discovery of x-rays, shoe stores started installing them and using them on kids feet to size shoes. Lead was added to gasoline to improve engine performance, and paint to make it whiter. We all know about asbestos and DDT.

We look back at all of this and think, "how could people have been so incompetent back then?" Some of these things caused irreparable harm in their generation, some continue to cause harm today almost 100 years later.

If it were happening in the Balkins, we would invade and try Trump for his role in "Ethnic Cleansing." But America is "too big to fail," just like Germany was, so governments around the world do nothing while everyone outside of the ruling class watches in horror.

I'm not saying there isn't any problem, but I am saying that thatcherism/reaganism is absolutely how everyone dies. How about we stop American private equity from draining the economy, ignore all US laws against reverse engineering, stop paying copy levy to the US, and legalize squatting again to make it so giant corporations can't hold all the housing stock? Maybe we can check in after that.
