I had never thought this will happen but yesterday, I submitted a request to cancel my GNOME Foundation membership. The project has become a home for a bunch of toxic (some extremely, some less so) people, who are not only working against the interests of the future of the project, but also bullying anyone who doesn't agree with them. I don't want to be associated with such people in any way. Besides, it's not like I have made any direct contributions to the project for more than a...

A few months ago, I was bullied by a few people (you know who you are) on #gnome-hackers matrix channel for my "lack of evidence" (which I had clearly provided) that many anti-LLM folks are quite aggressive. I eventually left the room because of the aggression I faced (oh, the irony!). I understand how it's hard to accept the truth because of personal biases (I'm pretty sure I have the same issue, like the rest of us) but even the most biased person has to admit that this comm...

Dear (potential) #zlink users: if there are any breaking changes you think are needed, now would be a very good time to report them. We recently bumped the semver for a few essential fixes and I'd really like to avoid doing this too often. Please RT.

a friend of mine who lives in Berlin, is in a very bad state. They're having many moments of self-harm (pulling their hair mainly) and crying endlessly. They refuse to go to an ER because they think it's not urgent enough as they are not harming anyone or considering suicide (for now). Their GP will only give appointment next week. Where could they turn?

@pixelfed@mastodon.social awesome! Have the huge issues been resolved already? I tried it many months (or was it even longer?) and it was barely usable and extremely slow, despite being low traffic at that point.

Tell yourself whatever you need to but the story of Bun's oxidation, and Zig not only losing its biggest user but potential contributions, is very much a "Adapt to the agentic era or be left behind!" story. I understand why people are against LLMs and there's always a chance resistance can win over compliance but I predict this is not a winnable fight because of how extremely useful these tools can be and we live in a capitalist world. Instead I see more and m...

I added glib (well gvariant) to dbus byte encoding benchmarks recently and (not so surprisingly) it's quite bad in comparison to almost all other Rust D-Bus encoding APIs. In one case, we're talking 231.98 Β΅s for zvariant vs 2.8925 ms for glib. https://github.com/KillingSpark/rust-dbus-comparisons#current-results

Me: Can you count your fingers? Yasha counts all the fingers on his right hand. Me: Now can you count all the fingers on both hands? He counts each finger on both hands simultaneously as one. π I tried to tell him but he didn't want to listen. He insists on applying parallelism to a problem that clearly doesn't need it.

I made a language detection app for Android. It runs completely locally and offline and I think it does a fairly good job. Google won't let me publish it on their store w/o it getting a lot of testing by many people so I really need some volunteers for this. DM me with your email address if you want to help me out here. π Please re-toot for reach.

unsolicited advice for anyone designing new D-Bus APIs: if you think you need optional properties, you're likely wrong. People forget that interfaces in D-Bus are designed to be dynamic and an object path can have as many interfaces as needed. The advice: split your interfaces well and add/remove them on paths, instead. That's also much cleaner and thanks to ObjectManager interface, there is a well-established way for clients to track any changes in interfaces.

The recording of my @fosdem talk "How I optimized zbus by 95%" is finally published: https://video.fosdem.org/2025/ub2252a/fosdem-2025-4104-how-i-optimized-zbus-by-95-.av1.webm Unfortunately, certain portions of the recording were lost so you'll notice a few skips. I also discuss #varlink in the last 11 minutes (starting at time index 00:23:45).

I just merged a change that I've dreamed about for years and various users have also asked for: deprecated `zvariant::{SerializeDict, DeserializeDict}` in favor of direct use of `serde::{Serialize, Deserialize}`: https://github.com/dbus2/zbus/pull/1354 This makes me so happy.

zbus recently passed 20 million unique downloads on crates.io. π With downloads peaking consistently on weekdays (reaching to 70K on some days) and dropping drastically on the weekends, it's very obvious that most of this use is commercial. So if you or your company relies on zbus, please consider sponsoring my work. π Resharing of this message would also help. https://github.com/sponsors/zeenix
