Cassandra has had an adventure

Sometimes I write intimate eschatologies or words about technology and math. Sometimes I make things by burning them with light or squeezing them through a small, hot tube. Sometimes I push water with a stick while sitting in a tiny boat.

Pixelfed is slop. I just. That is the absolute last thing I needed to see today. I haven't done my photography work in a few months because of surgical recovery, but Pixelfed has been *integral* to that work, in part as an alternative to Instagram — the whole fucking industry revolves around Instagram, and Pixelfed has one of an exceedingly small number of viable alternatives. And now they're slop.

I'm gonna complain about something other than AI for a moment, because I literally cannot think about AI right now without losing my shit, and that's not good for anyone involved. So. Um. Razer hardware. It's kinda great for about three years, then it starts dying. Other than keyboards, I haven't found many peripherals that quite do what Razer's offerings do, but they are all so short-lived and disposable, I hate it.

I get this is me crashing out over AI fuckshit again, but I really just want to put a plain and simple statement: LLMs are fascist. Notably, something I did *not* say two days ago and am not saying now is that if you use them you are personally a fascist. Fascism is here, and we have to make our own negotiations with ourselves as to where to fight, where to direct our energies, and where we make do in order to get by. https://wandering.shop/@xgranade/117311622725415817

Sometimes I feel compelled to have an opinion on something that does not need my opinion, and that no one asked me to comment on. The trick of social media, even independent non-corporate interoperable community-driven social media, is making everything seem like a public debate where each of us must step up to the mic and say something. But. You know there's always a "but." (con'd)

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@inthehands/117326716308932923 It's only been an hour, but already I'm kind of obssessing over this toot. The original post is about OSS and LLMs, making an incredibly necessary point in that context, but I think it goes much deeper. There's a radical statement made by FOSS principles, namely that source code is meant to be read and understood. Auditability is pointless without legibility and transparency.

LLMs are fascist technology. Note that I didn't say "cloud-hosted LLMs" or "LLMs that aren't local-only" or some other qualifier. I did not, in fact, stutter.

Perhaps the most singularly exhausting part of the AI hype train is that so many people pretend like Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Dario Amodei and the like should be taken seriously as sources of information — that we should treat any of these ne'er-do-wells as having a point, actually.

Linux, Python, GCC all have slopware commits now. Trying to create a fascism-free dependency chain now means making an entirely new OS and compiler toolchain. I fucking hate it.

"Why is Proton cross-marketing with Framework," she asked, fully knowing the answer but feigning ignorance out of exhaustion.

RE: https://sunbeam.city/@hazelnot/117286727982271780 I'm so fucking exhausted. We need less active sabotage in open source and more principles that stand up for users against fascism. [Edit: it's been pointed out to me in DMs that there is some uncertainty about the KDE situation in particular — please take my replies as a more general point, given that, and not specific to the KDE situation.]

INT. QA LABS — DAY A 10X DEVELOPER sits at a chair, examining a variety of special purpose libraries, languages, algorithms, and other tools created over the past fifty years. An EXPERIMENTER hands him a new task, shaped exactly like one of the tools spread out across the table. EXPERIMENTER Which hole does this one go in? EXPERIMENTER (con'd) That's right, the AI hole! From behind the one-way mirror, we hear the faint echo of a defeated scream.

Assuming I'm correct in understanding that this is slop, it illustrates one of the more pernicious problems with AI in a fascist culture: artists can say no, matrix multiplication cannot. https://mastodon.social/@randahl/117232177058348447

It's bad praxis to quote-dunk, but I think this is about the most condensed example I've seen of that kind of self-assured smugness in a long time. We haven't lost yet, we aren't giving up without a fight, and we aren't going to less the common good go quietly into the night because FOMO. When your adversary tells you you will necessarily lose, do not take their advice and give up. Keep fighting.

In another edition of "Cass tries to solve problems that Cass caused for herself," trying to ditch VSCodium now that it's just unusuably slow, and running into that Kate can't start an LSP server because it can't find PDM on PATH because I installed PDM using Nix and that doesn't exist from within the Flatpak environment. Siiiiiigh.

In the fullness of time, space, and the incomprehensible infinities of square dance night at the Hilbert Hotel, it may turn out that the boosters have the right of it and we critics were wrong. Even should such miracles come to pass, that does not mean that our criticisms were wrong or invalid given what we know *now* — as opposed to what we might come to learn in some hypothetical future.

AI is really the perfect reflection of American society, huh? Something that doesn't work, is built entirely on scams, but takes off anyway because the only people who have the ability to do anything about it are neither able nor interested in becoming able to evaluate anything on technical merits, because we live in a post-truth culture, and live under an economy that can only understand limitless growth and consumption.
