Another update from running my Mastodon server, mustard.blog. After I blocked direct API account registration, the automated signup activity changed tactics almost immediately: a rejected API signup was followed by the normal browser signup flow, including rules acceptance, username lookup, account creation, and email confirmation. That showed me the existing honeypots and timing checks weren’t enough for a client capable of reproducing normal browser behavior. I’ve now moved hCaptcha to befo...

I recently came across a disturbing story in the Korean online community. According to the person involved, someone had collected years’ worth of their old social media posts, traced information about their offline identity, and eventually contacted their workplace with screenshots and other material. They later had to explain those posts at work. Whatever the original dispute was, it made me think again about how easily ordinary social media can turn into something much more invasive. A post...

RE: https://social.vivaldi.net/@thanksstevenkim/117150622690285108 A new update to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Fediverse is deploying... now! This round was shaped by useful feedback I received after sharing the project. The main point was fair: this is not a complete census of the fediverse. It is a continuously refreshed sample, discovered from deliberately chosen seed instances and their public peer relationships. I’ve now made that limitation explicit in the documentation, rather than p...

I’ve been working on a small Fediverse project called "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Fediverse". It started as a simple directory of Fediverse instances, but I’ve been gradually turning it into something more useful: - discovering new instances through federation peers - filtering suspicious/spammy hosts - monitoring known instances over time - automatically hiding servers that stay offline - bringing them back if they recover - keeping the whole thing updated with GitHub Actions Th...

RE: https://social.vivaldi.net/@thanksstevenkim/117154791519179296 A few people have asked where the “710,000 spam servers” number in my previous post came from, so I thought I should explain it more clearly. First, I should clarify something: calling all of them “spam servers” was an oversimplification for the joke. A more accurate description would be hosts filtered out as likely spam/noise by my automated filter. When I run `filter_spam.py` for the project, I get the following results. The...

So, I admit that filtering out instances simply because they use the `.cf` TLD can be unfair. After all, it's just a TLD — that's not enough reason by itself to filter an instance out. So I took a closer look at the JSON file containing the hosts that were actually filtered. And the overwhelming majority of the `.cf` hosts were: `activitypub-troll.cf` I'm not kidding. The screenshots show the actual JSON data I got, and they're only a tiny fraction of the full...

“So apparently if you take a tomato and put some sugar on it, it should taste like a strawberry!" Well actually... It's pretty common in Korea to put sugar on tomatoes!🍅 Koreans tend to think of tomatoes more as a fruit than a vegetable, so putting sugar on them isn't that unusual. No, it doesn't taste like strawberries or anything. It just tastes like tomatoes, but sweeter😅 Personally, I'm not a huge fan. But I do crave them sometimes.😋 #tomatoes #K...

Lately, I've been getting pretty tired of seeing people from different countries put down Koreans' looks with the stereotype that "Koreans all get plastic surgery," while claiming that people from their own country are naturally better-looking. Putting aside the fact that assuming every attractive Korean has had surgery is a stereotype, plastic surgery is a personal choice. Having it doesn't automatically mean someone is insecure about their appearance, nor does it give an...

Hi! I'm Steven from South Korea, currently living in Japan. 🇰🇷🇯🇵 I've been running a Mastodon instance called **Mustard** for the past four years, and I'd love to share my experiences running a community server here. I'll also be posting about the things I enjoy. I'm interested in learning languages—especially Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, and Russian. I'll probably use this as my English account, but if you'd like, I'm happy to share my main Korean account too....
