TIL: Unlike say Windows `CreateFileMapping()` which expands the size of the mapped file to the requested size if it's larger than the file, POSIX `mmap()` doesn't... and any data you write to the mapping past the previous end of file won't be saved anywhere, so you might find that your file is truncated compared to what you expected.

just so it doesn't go without saying: if you ship a piece of software with gui, and the user has to click on a region with an invisible border to perform an action a certain way, YOU FUCKED UP!

Note for depinning molex mini-fit jr connnectors (the ones used for atx mobo power, PCIe power, the power supply side connections on most modular computer power supplies): As an alternative to buying a depinning tool, people will suggest the "staple trick" using unfolded staples. I find these are a nuisance to insert fully and maybe using two of them leads to a misunderstanding about what actually needs to happen

lol, i can't tell if i have the right cultural context here; on this continent when somebody says there is insufficient "community support" to do a thing, it means police are on the take and need the money to be made right before anything happens https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c20l7g5dpgvo

bell called the 3b20d alu board, with its two separate bit-slice alus operating in parallel as an accuracy check, the "data manipulation unit" this sounds like a good band name or maybe intelligence agency department name https://documentation.nokia.com/cgi-bin/dbaccessfilename.cgi/303095_V1_UX%20RTR%20ARCH%20OVVW%203B20D.pdf#page=13

i guess the reason these companies have business plans that are like a madlib of pascal's wager filled out by somebody who can't remember what the different parts of speech are, and all decide at once to do exactly the same our-thing-is-a-hacker no-such-thing-as-bad-publicity routine, is that when you're dogfooding your own prototype huffing-your-own-farts-as-a-service service you don't decide anything, truly no brain cells were harmed in the making of any decision https://futuri...

LB: i used to work at a place where if you left your desktop unlocked people would change your screensaver to shit like this "as a joke". it was about as toxic on the literal first day and rarely let up. my catchphrase became "we're gonna get sued!" which I would say after somebody said something odious, which was regularly. it died without finding a coherent product idea. i guess don't ever let it be said that at any time it didn't alr...

It's wild how these are stumped with as if a combination of an obvious bad land use you could easily put literally anywhere and a purported jobs program with very few actual jobs on location is a sort of valuable regional program https://www.canada.ca/en/innovation-science-economic-development/news/2026/05/government-of-canada-and-telus-advance-work-to-build-sovereign-ai-infrastructure.html

like even if you hand it to people that "if it walks like reasoning it's reasoning" -- which, the devil is in the details of what kind of reasoning we're talking about there, like my desk calculator does reasoned operations after a fashion but i'm not gonna expect it to write a thesis --

but here's the thing about "what do we do to make a new computing industry": there are an embarassment of possible answers that are not just polishing the silverware on the titanic, but polishing it when it's already 12500 feet below the surface

LB: honestly this is one of those ones that used to hang the emulators and i could go back now knowing much more about their internals to tinker on that somewhat, if it wasn't that I concluded a couple years back that if a trillion dollar company wants to kill the past, who am I as a very very tangentially adjacent person to spend my own forks I have very few of anymore to try to offset that?

i'm kinda going to where jeff is at too re the fcc routers thing: it sounds like a step they take before they mandate some kind of creepy inclusions, in addition to presumably being some kind of shakedown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04oL0qVSWJE
