Excuse me but haven't we seen multiple lawyers professionally disciplined for relying on LLMs to prepare briefs and then submitting documents with misleading or nonexistent citations and other substantial errors in them? So why in the seven hells is CanLII putting an "AI Summary" under each item in its search results?

Do you like one-line code change proposals that come with more than a hundred lines of docs changes? Of course you do. https://forge.grimoire.ca/pilcrow/pilcrow/pulls/55

me: surely this is too trivial to test, but sure, for form's sake me five minutes later: _three_ bugs?!

I think the funniest thing about at least this iteration of Alienware's bitlocker setup is that any time it wants the recovery key, it's entirely valid to power the machine down and back up again, at which point the boot process will proceed normally instead.

The state of `JSON.parse` is so dire it makes me want to write a JSON processor.

One of my cognitive quirks is that I can expend my drive to complete a task by talking through what I will do. It's a matter of degree, and the more I talk something out the less likely I am to actually do it. You might imagine how a daily mandatory brief, detailing my plans for the day and requiring me to answer in detail if someone wants to know more, might affect me.

I don't think it's possible to have a license-centric view of free/open software that doesn't center the state.

Since it's nearly impossible to search for this without being inundated with DOM-level focus event information, is there a standard DOM event for when a browser window, hosting a page that is visible, loses or gains focus?

I think I've finally hit on a big element of why Slack frustrates me so much as a workplace communication tool: the work of communication is transferred from the speaker to the audience by the structure of the tool, versus tools with more intentional communication styles (going back to email, but also including things like bug trackers) where the onus is on the author to structure what they have to say for legibility and to ensure that they reach the intended audiences.

RE: https://mastodon.me.uk/@Floppy/117007843142581793 Extremely pleased to see this kind of upwards consequence for being an asshole. This is the second such project I've seen this week; the other is for Firefox, to remove Moz Corp's AI and cross-promotion gunk.

The FFXIV community is once again having a giggle about the story of Gae Bolga, which means I am once again considering the degree to which identifiable sexual orientations and gender archetypes _cannot be understood_ without the society in which they exist.

I'm not using third-party libraries because it takes too long to write all that code for myself. I'm using third-party libraries because I think the authors know something about the domains involved, and have reified their understanding in code. If there's no understanding to reify, then it's not useful to me.

I think it's telling that the common public framing of the Luddite movement, at its _most_ sympathetic, still stops at "yeah, they had some valid points, but they still lost" Motivating resistance to industrial capture of a craft industry more than a century later may not be a complete success, but it's pretty damned far from a failure. So is providing a clear way to discuss that capture that the average person can at least get their head around.

https://about.gitlab.com/blog/gitlab-act-2/ Gitlab started giving me bad vibes a few years back, and I abandoned my attempt to relocate my Github stuff over to it at that time. This press release makes me _extraordinarily_ glad that I dodged the metaphorical bullet. The news itself is depressing, but the things it reveals about the company's leadership are inexcusable.

Do you want to put a web page on a .local address to do something cool for your household or club? Here's the list of browser features that browser vendors have decided you're just not fuckin' allowed to use. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Security/Defenses/Secure_Contexts/features_restricted_to_secure_contexts Some random site halfway around the world, served over https with a robo-verified certificate, is allowed, though, so take some comfort in that.

RE: https://mastodon.transneptune.net/@owen/116529543186641483 I have since found confirmation that the 4GB blob Google helpfully shat into Chrome users' computers and the standards proposal linked below are two ends of the same project. Someone at Google is in a real hurry to turn their quarterly performance review into a durable internet standard.

Watching people hit the activation energy on their discontent with Github is giving me life. Look, moving off of a service like that is not a zero-cost decision. It's a fairly expensive one, in terms of time investment, _especially_ if you've taken Github up on offers like free compute for your build pipeline, but even if you're relying on repository hosting and not much else it's a pain in the ass. Sticking around until that cost is worth paying makes sense.

Absolute dragonfire from a friend of mine: > Anarchists never compelled me at their meetings, with their arguments, to learn more about anarchism. And I am not an anarchist. But _Yokohama Shopping Trip_ got me to imagine a world without overwhelming top-down coercion of almost every living human. And the vision was so touching and so intriguing that my next read was _Conquest of Bread_.

Take a long breath. Remember that someone is getting paid to persuade you that their pet technology is The Future and that Everyone Is Using It But You. Remember that that's just advertising - an intrusive and noxious kind even against the intrusive and noxious baseline, but still just advertising. Do something that matters to you instead.

RE: https://woof.group/@aphyr/116323747530229471 One of the functional outcomes - I might, cynically, call it an intentional one - of these bills is to raise the barrier to entry for running a social service on the internet. The incumbents and the financiers backing explosive-growth venture startups can afford compliance resources that a community admin can't, and these bills are characteristically long on compliance obligations.

Someone on Mozilla's blog just said the quiet part out loud: https://circumstances.run/@davidgerard/115951178170456830 The enterprise Firefox product can be differentiated from the version offered to the public in terms of whether it is or is not a data collection surface.
