Today, for the "Citizens Bank stop funding ICE, CoreCivic, and GEO Group" protest, I taped to the bottom of my sign this article published on Tuesday. It worked! People were interested; one nurse even snapped a photo to look up the paper when she got home. Morris, J. E., Digidiki, V., Fredricks, K., Ragheb, J. M., Kunichoff, D., Sullivan, M. M., Gartland, M., & Sridhar, S. (2026). Substandard medical care of detained immigrant children experiencing common acute illnesses: Evidence...

Hi #medlibs I thought twice before posting this because we know that complying in advance is not good. But I'm not *complying*; I'm raising awareness of another apparent power grab by the administration

Just read news coverage about the Brown econ class where the scores on the take-home, no-gen-AI-allowed midterm were astoundingly high and the scores on the proctored final exam were much lower (among the students who didn't just drop the class when the prof announced the final would be proctored) I would like to be friends with Student 22, who got the lowest score on the midterm (not so far below the historical midterm average though) and then scored a bit higher - and above the threshold...

Who thinks it's useful to have the HR website email people to say "you have training newly assigned to you" without any further details? What is the training about? By what date do I have to do it? How long will it take? Who assigned it? All mysteries

Dear local govt official, You can say you sent out notifications by mail in February. But my house didn't get it, and the three neighbors I asked didn't get it either. Do you think it's likely that all of us somehow missed the notice?

Well I finally scoped out different car insurance options, and every single new company offered me several hundred dollars cheaper than the policy from my current insurer. So, as much as it's infuriating that I'll have to do it again in a year, it's good that I pulled myself together and sorted it out. #LifeAdmin #ExecutiveFunctionTheft

FFS NCBI has a perfectly good API. Why are scrapers hitting PubMed so hard that they have to put up captchas that waste my time and break my citation manager

Never mind -- apparently it's a known issue that the audio and captions only show up at minute 9 of the recording. (Why that "known issue" took a 70-minute help chat to find out....) Favor from anyone out there with an HBO Max subscription -- can you try streaming stage 2 of the Giro d'Italia and tell me if you have sound or captions? Thank you! (not just sound in the preliminary ads, but for the actual program) #HBOMax #HBO #Max #Giro

RE: https://fediscience.org/@nyhan/116357586323469021 Hoorah hoorah! ACS has finally sorted out Environmental Health Perspectives DOIs or, wait some of them are sorted, like https://doi.org/10.1289/ehp16791. And some are not, like https://doi.org/10.1289/ehp16791.

Why do journals articulate different article types but then refrain from giving you any convenient way to look at their "perspectives" versus their "commentaries" versus their "brief reports" versus their "letters" to figure out what the definitions mean in practice?

RE: https://fediscience.org/@TranslateScience/116320419149897985 Event and book rec I did a short course with this author at FSCI and it was great, and so was her previous book. This new on, Plain Language for Translators, looks really interesting too. Librarians: acquire! Everyone interested in multilingual health communication or scicomm: check it out!

The only "superpower" of SARS-CoV-2, in my opinion, was the reluctance of the WHO and CDC to recognize that it transmits via the airborne route.

We identified and classified the documents we studied based on a well-designed prompt to an LLM. Then to ensure robustness we employed a different LLM as an independent validator.

@ZebKing Not sure if anyone joined, but I gave a talk about joining Mastodon at a conference. 39 people loaded the slide deck, so maybe there was some interest? But... that deck also had info useful for librarians supporting scholars who want to source social media data for research, and if I recall correctly, all the questions in the Q and A related to that. (Not that there were many at all.)

RE: https://mastodon.social/@freakonometrics/116425881793394843 FWIW I was trying to look up a journal policy page (from a major for-profit publisher - maybe Wiley?) yesterday, in hopes of figuring out if the journal was still hybrid or already fully APC-based OA when the author who asked for help submitted the manuscript. Apparently the publisher doesn't allow archiving of their websites - not even the author instructions kind of page :(

Hi folks, seeking advice about balancing #privacy and physical security I'm thinking of installing the "Livesafe" app that my employer (a university) uses to manage emergencies. But I'm hesitating because I'm not sure I want to share my location data with my employer.

It's four months after the American Chemical Society, an expensive "non-profit" publisher, announced that it's taking over the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, which used to be published on a diamond OA basis by NIEHS (an institute of NIH). Existing DOIs are still not resolving. For example: https://doi.org/10.1289/ehp15953

OTOH everyone always says "don't put too much text on a slide!" OTOH The goal for this slide (and frankly, the whole deck) is: persuade trainees that different funders' policies requirements differ and they need to find out what their funders' expectations are
