That Three Good Things is inspired by the memorial service for my friend Gail. I want to share some of the stories people told with Fedi. Once, someone moved here and didn't have a car yet. She walked up to the town dump (where Gail held court) to ask about renting a car. "Sure, jump in, I'll drive you to where I have another truck. Can you drive stick?" "Yes, I can." "That's lucky, because if you couldn't, you'd have to use the van we're in, and what if someone dies on the island this week? This is the island hearse!" Gail ran the dump on the principle of reuse, repair, and recycle. I think every house on this island has something she rescued from the waste stream and displayed until a new owner could be found. I especially appreciated this when I was clearing out my father's shed and trying to pass on some of his tools; Gail always knew who would appreciate a hand-me-down tackle box, can of paint, or chainsaw. All the island dogs loved Gail, because she gave them hugs and biscuits at the dump. She often dog sat a miniature poodle, and when people saw the poodle with his owners, they would ask, "Who are you and what are you doing with Gail's dog?"
