The Psychotic Network Ferret

Level 0x2F, Neutral Evil, Technomage. I love UNIX systems, and build carrier grade networks for fun and profit. I'm also a musician, historian, avid gardener, terrible photographer, and a pretty decent cook. Lover
of fuzzy animals of all sorts, but especially the kleptomaniacal, tube shaped ones. I have a dog named Hazard Dax of whom I will share a near endless supply of pics.

Most toots auto-delete after seven days. Fuuuuuck, Netbox has gone slop. Now I need to find an alternative. I wrote an IPAM many years ago, maybe I should just it again with expanded scope.

It seems that @pixelfed@mastodon.social has reversed course: https://mastodon.social/@pixelfed/117350705262301318 Even though it is software I don't use, I am glad to see an alternative social media platform opting to stay AI Free. People that want to use alternatives to the AI ridden corporate created options probably consider the AI use factor strongly in their decision when hey select an alternative. We didn't all come to the Fediverse so we could make it as shitty as the mainstre...

Tried to watch Coyote vs Acme the other day. What a piece of shit movie. It's not funny for the same reason Tiny Tunes and later Tom and Jerry weren't funny: Too much plot. They ruined a working formula with too much plot. You can't take falling anvils, rocket skates, and exploding birdseed, and attach it to a full on legal battle with an underlying conspiracy, chock full of dialogue and expect it to work. It falls flat on its face. Coyote vs Acme is boring, really and terribly bo...

Asking the hive mind, because maybe this already exists. I need the organ solo from Inagodadavida, on a seamless repeat. Like, start at the very end of the drum solo, and either do the whole thing and loop, or progress much slower through the phases of the organ solo itself. I may have to mix this on my own, and I may have to start it with Toccata and Fugue and fade into Inagodadavida. I have three weeks to figure this out. Wish me luck!

nuintari's rules of networking 0x35: The network engineer is guilty until they identify the real culprit. Said culprit is then presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond any shadow of a doubt by the network engineer. It's not fair, get used to it, this is your life now.

I was mucking around on bgp.he.net the other day, and noticed that the ASN and prefixes for $weCantSellFiber are no longer being announced. My boy! Look what they did to my boy!

FINE! You fucking win, I'll convert my VPN for sailing the high seas over to wireguard. Because apparently iVPN can keep an OpenVPN tunnel up for somewhere between five days and five seconds, and it rarely fails gracefully and recovers.

I love #Perl I really do, and contrary to popular belief it is almost always possible to write clean, readable Perl. Except when you have shit like this: for my $foo (@{$bar->baz}) { my $qux = $foo->quux; } That shit drives me fucking bonkers. I'll forget the next time I need to do something like that, I always do.

Okay, I just wrote what I call fedimemer, a program that allows me to reply to other posts (or just post on its own) with memes, alt text is already set, and I can add optional comments. All I have to do now, is gather up a collection of memes. This seems more efficient than searching for, downloading, and posting a meme manually. I usually don't remember to add alt text, and I never keep the files in a sane, easily searchable place. Now, I just run 'fedimemer -l' and find the on...

My sister is back in the hospital this morning. She managed to get a sunburn so bad yesterday that she probably has an infection and they are concerned she may turn septic. Right now, I provide maybe 1/4 of my sister's care. My mother does the rest, mostly because I live 30 miles away, and my mother lives two miles away. I have to confess that one of my biggest fears in life is that when my mother is gone, my sister's care will fall to me completely. I love my sister, but if you look a...

So, I need to send alerts from UNIX systems (Linux, BSD, whatever), to my mobile devices. I am certain there are many ways to do this. Does anyone have a way that doesn't completely suck? A way that they actually like? ie: requirement one, something I can self host?

I've been using and programming computers for decades now. I'm almost ashamed to admit I just figured out how to make the cursor disappear this morning. printing "\033[?25l" --turns the cursor off printing "\033[?25h" --turns it back on Convert to your language of choice as needed. I of course now have to bolt this onto about 3 dozen Perl scripts. Incidentally, this came about because I decided I wanted a command line stopwatch app that didn't suck. The curso...

I want to make one thing abundantly clear. I do not hate AI because I think it is gonna go all Skynet and kill all humans. The people who believe that shit are morons. I hate AI because it makes its users stupid. I hate it because it is enabling a survalence state. I hate it because deepfakes and AI slop are filling the world with garbage and propoganda, and making the world a shittier place to live. I hate it because the mega AI datacenters are awful, resource hogging neighbors that no one sh...

Five high CVEs and eight medium ones announced just yesterday. I swear, Fortinet is the most perfect and shining example of the old adage, "We can't write secure software, why should anyone believe we can write secure security software?" I forget who said it first.

Since I am on the subject of Olive Garden, which claims to be an Italian restaurant, I have a question for my actually Italian friends like @stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe . How much heavy cream is actually used in authentic Italian cuisine? Because I am convinced every single thing at Olive Garden contains heavy cream. The salads eventually end up with a dressing that is at least partially heavy cream based. I think the breadsticks are somehow made with it. Hell, I think the water probably contains...

Okay, so more story time. My Friday's fucking good deeds going very punished. I manage the computers at my mother's church. It pays nothing, I do it out of the kindness of my heart. I'm not even religious, I'm honestly some what anti-theist. But, they provide community services such as a food pantry, community meals, AA and NA meetings, and it matters to my mom and sister. So I help. Go to migrate the old PC's files to a new one. I should have done this a month ago BTW, b...

I have a weird quirk, and I wanna know if anyone else does this. I readily absorb the accents of the people I am around. Stick me around my friend Andrew for a few hours, and I've got a decidedly London accent. Send me to Tennessee for a day and I've got a southern drawl that is driving my wife insane. Hell, if I watch enough of the Sopranos I start sounding like a shitty interpretation of the Jersey Shore. It takes longer when the accent isn't foundationally English, but a few da...
