I am sick to death of breathless idiotic reporting about AI. No. A statistical model cannot feel pain. It can’t feel anything. Feeling is outside its existence. It generates output based on input and training and complicated maths. It “thinks” by essentially telling itself a story that happens to usually be close to true. It can do some impressive things for a pile of floating point numbers, but it is not and never will be a sapient being. It’s not Data. It’s not even R2-D2. It’s just a potentia...

I really wish that the people looking for an LLM free computing life had better options. The problem is that real world software tends to exist in stacks of projects with no common developers or rules. And if any one part of the stack prematurely embraces AI, the whole stack now has a problem for the people who don’t want that. Right now, Linux and GCC and LLVM are already “tainted”. It’s becoming a practical impossibility to exist without using LLM code and that bothers me on others behalf....

I have mixed feelings about watching people scramble to try to secure software that isn't "LLM tainted". I mean, they have every right to a choice in their software, and I think major projects are making a major mistake adopting the tech this early. But I feel like they're setting themselves up for disappointment when those smaller projects either don't meet requirements or get LLM-tainted. So it's like, I support them but I don't think they'll succeed, but I...

Hey, silly request, but if anyone has any Cocoa development textbooks focused on Objective-C and hand-writing interfaces without IB or XCode, I'd love to adopt them.

So... do you guys really think being 4chan-troll-level relentless arseholes at whoever runs social media for the Internet Archive and Electronic Frontier Foundation is going to lead to any kind of prosocial result?

I hate my new TV. It works fine, the price was fair, and it's slightly bigger than the old one, but it's a "smart" TV. Not only that, it's got "AI Vision" or some such "feature" that does something or other I have no idea because I disabled everything that could be disabled in the settings and just left it on HDMI input from my Apple TV box.

I may or may not use the slop extruder to make some one-off tool or little personal thing that I just want to have, or meet some larger goal of mine that it can legitimately help with. I will never try to sneak slopcode into someone else's project. That's a big league dick move. If I choose to enshittify something I own to get something done, that's my choice, but I don't go shitting on other people's lawns.

Only you can do the weird shit nobody else will. You have something unique buried inside you. Find it and make it real, because the world needs it.

The problem with programmers is we let them convince us to aspire to be CEOs instead of honest tradespeople.

In slop world, you can make whatever you want, but nothing is yours. You can have anything you desire for the asking, but none of it will matter. There's no passion, no pain, no drive, no satisfaction. All of humanity boiled down to something you can consume, but which lacks all flavour and texture. In slop world, everything is a copy of a copy of a copy of something else. Everything is uncanny valley, we have Backrooms at home wrong.

Is the point of all that AGENTS.md bollocks to “engineer” [spits] a prompt so “perfect” that the slop extruder spits out the “right” output the first time? Because that’s how I keep seeing people use these things on YouTube and it feels like it’s skipping the iteration and testing cycle inherent to getting what you actually want out of anything, slop or not.

So you say you won’t use vibe coded software. Cool. I’m on your side. I just worry that this may be a practically untenable position to hold - theres no law requiring LLM disclosure, Linux is already accepting slopcode, to say nothing of Windows and macOS. What the fuck are we to do? I’m not being smug here. I’m actually asking.

Drugs amuse me. Ever since sentience first evolved on this planet, those afflicted with the condition have sought ways to turn that shit off.

I give zero fucks about the copyright bollocks around LLMs because copyright is capitalist bullshit. What I do give a shit about is the wasteful use of power and water and how it’s being used against tech labour and how it’s not even that good at its job.

What goes in main()? It's a valid question. There are lots of answers. There's nothing stopping your whole program being one long main function. But if you're looking to make your code maintainable long-term, you'll want to break things up into small, reusable units.

Adding “-fms-extensions” to CFLAGS enables a Microsoft extension to C: anonymous tagged struct and union members. For example: struct foo { struct bar; // note the tag but no name uint64_t baz; }; The declared struct here imports all members of struct bar into struct foo as if they were part of it. I think this belongs in the C standard myself.
