RE: https://wandering.shop/@joshsutphin/117389466966227280 (With no hostility intended toward Josh here—) I am literally begging all of you to stop giving Spotify money. There are so many alternatives. "A music streaming service" is not a hard problem to solve and like 8 companies have solved it. The company that makes your phone OS has solved it (this is true for both major phone OSes).

: **doesn't load** : Well, that's understandable. It's a small service operated by volunteers, and amidst what is effectively a permanent DDOS by AI scrapers, we can't really expect they've got the resources of Github. : **doesn't load**

The existence of RedoxOS and ReactOS implies the existence of a RedactOS. Now if you go and look, you'll find there's no evidence of a RedactOS ever existing. And of course that's exactly what you'd expect https://chitter.xyz/@gutmunchies/117379709019788043

Very occasionally I encounter someone huffily arguing "well why does everyone complain about the water/energy expenditure of AI but they just look the other way on the water/energy expenditure of FARMING". Well it's pretty obvious, it's because if we had to give up exactly one of "generative AI" or "food", we'd rather have food

Bluesky is having an odd little debate about use of the phrase "stochastic parrot" and how it appears to be the one phrase that just sends AI advocates into a rage, and I'm really torn, because while I'm in favor of making Ai advocates angry, I sincerely believe that parrots are capable of both understanding concepts and using language to intentionally communicate about their understandings of concepts. And I believe this is not true of LLMs

To answer the article's question: It is unethical to run a program that "tortures" an LLM because in order to do this you must run the LLM and it is unethical to run an LLM 🤷‍♀️

What is the relationship between the PCRE and PCRE2 libraries? Is one an API version 1.0 and the second an API version 2.0, or is PCRE2 a hostile fork, or is PCRE2 a new ground-up reimplementation with a different API by a different team?

I lie down in bed and close my eyes. What I expect my brain to do at this point is start producing the chemicals that make me fall asleep. What my brain does instead is drop on me the couplet "Korma police Arrest this naan" …what am I supposed to do with that?

My generative AI has gone rogue. The conversation prompt terminal is gone and now there's just a crude ASCII rendition of a series of cellars. I have a blue potion and 4 pieces of gold. A letter Q is advancing on me menacingly

*rolling around on the floor holding head* language runtimes are so interesting… operating systems are so boring… why are operating systems so much more useful than language runtimes. It's not fair

Rust wgpu now has a .agents/skills, a .claude/skills, an AGENTS.md, and a CLAUDE.md. Increasingly wondering if my goal of living in a way that I never benefit from the actions of generative AI users and generative AI users never benefit from the actions of me is going to inherently mean never using hardware-accelerated video on a computer again.

Okay. Linux tolerators. I have a question. Which of these two hypothetical syntaxes for a configuration file do you like better? If you like one or the other better, do you like it *so* much better you'd say something like "I would find this categorically easier to read and work with". Or do you just like it better.

The reason I assume bad faith on the part of AI-curious project maintainers is because I keep having conversations with people who are trashing AI all over the place and then they let slip that they're actually using AI already, sometimes a *lot* of AI, it's just they have some elaborate rationalization where the AI *they* use is good and effective and it's only everyone else who is using AI wrong, and producing slop.

Living in the era of the AI omni-DDOS is weirdly similar to living in the era of dialup internet. Sites just don't load sometimes. Any cross-site image embedding (what we would come to call "CDNs" in the 00s) it's just a crapshoot whether it loads or takes 30 seconds to load or what, you get used to spotting empty spaces where an image is supposed to be but it didn't load. Search gives nonsense results about 30% of the time. There are no centralized repositories of open sou...

Romulan spies are constantly breaking into their office by accident and leaving devious traps, which Section 30 constantly assumes is part of a shadow war by the atavistic remnant militias of the California sparkling wine industry

Few things horrify me as much as when a service sets up a device as 2FA I did not tell it to set up as 2FA. I have a tablet. I use it to read books. Because I view it as a collection of books, I try to keep the tablet set up so I could lend it to a friend and nothing horrifically sensitive is exposed to them. Google is fundamentally unable to understand that concept

I'm in a public park. I'm reading a library book on my phone and listening to a jazz band playing while a woman sings in what I think is Arabic. This is nice.
