The reason I assume bad faith on the part of AI-curious project maintainers is because I keep having conversations with people who are trashing AI all over the place and then they let slip that they're actually using AI already, sometimes a *lot* of AI, it's just they have some elaborate rationalization where the AI *they* use is good and effective and it's only everyone else who is using AI wrong, and producing slop.

(There *is* a problem where "AI" is an incredibly elastic word, whose current meaning is mostly shaped by marketing. I personally would, if we were in some sort of perfectly abstract Athenian Forum philosophical debate, distinguish between "machine learning" and post-2018 LLM/genAI, with the gist being that machine learning is sometimes effective [though usually not optimal] for detection and classification, but cannot *generate* text or images for a function other than pure aesthetics.)
