@davidpierce@mastodon.social Please don’t naively repeat Bluesky propaganda: “…the Bluesky team is open-sourcing its moderation tool, so that anyone can build their own moderation systems and users can use whichever one they want” This is not true. What they have released is a tool that lets you build and share filters. Filtering is not moderation. Filtering is like “block this phrase” on Twitter, moderation is the posts actually being removed. Bluesky want to muddy the difference because they...

“We conduct randomized experiments to study how developers gained mastery of a new asynchronous programming library with and without the assistance of AI. We find that AI use impairs conceptual understanding, code reading, and debugging abilities, without delivering significant efficiency gains on average.” - Anthropic study #AI https://arxiv.org/abs/2601.20245

@Energetic_Nova@mastodon.social @audiodude@sfba.social @inthehands@hachyderm.io You can still enjoy extrinsic rewards, even treat yourself to rewards, the trick is making sure you don't let yourself feel rewarded for telling people about things before you've actually done them. The most effective way to avoid that is to not tell them. It's certainly difficult, because if you want to do something then by definition you're going to be enthusiastic about it, so you're going to...

@audiodude@sfba.social @inthehands@hachyderm.io Not telling people about projects also increases the chance you’ll complete them. If you tell people “I’m going to…” then your brain gets the dopamine hit immediately and then you can slack off. If you don’t tell anyone, you have to actually do the thing to get the reward.

« We find that sycophancy is both prevalent and harmful. Across 11 AI models, AI affirmed users’ actions 49% more often than humans on average, including in cases involving deception, illegality, or other harms. On posts from r/AmITheAsshole, AI systems affirm users in 51% of cases where human consensus does not (0%). In our human experiments, even a single interaction with sycophantic AI reduced participants’ willingness to take responsibility and repair interpersonal conflicts, while increasin...

Even though the Gentoo live CD worked fine, I couldn’t persuade my own install’s GUI to work after a couple of hours messing with configs. I’ve given up and installed Kinoite, because I enjoy rebooting a lot. I’ll probably set up BSD VMs on the machine.

We had this on the downstairs bathroom door at the old house. Now it’s on the utility closet door. I went to school a few miles from a major NATO command base, and would likely have been vaporized if Able Archer 83 had gone slightly worse. So this is partly a joke and partly a reminder. "So, you see these signs too, Dr. Black?" "Why, sure, Mrs. Rectangular." "Well, I feel better already."

@alcinnz@floss.social I used to have one that worked pretty well, it was called Data Hammer, for the Macintosh, by Glucose Development. It used a patented algorithm they called MTT or Micro-word Tree Trimming. There was a slider you could drag to increase or decrease the amount of summarization in real time! I’ve occasionally wondered if I could track down the patent and reimplement the algorithm. https://preserve.mactech.com/content/md1-glucose-releases-data-hammer-15-0 macOS and iOS have a s...

@bebop@defcon.social @anon_opin@mastodon.social I think safety standards and the chicken tax are a bigger issue than emissions standards. There’s definitely some “make it bigger so you can get away with worse fuel efficiency” though — even though it’s a compact car as far as size, the Chrysler PT Cruiser was categorized as a light truck so it could get away with 18 mpg. I understand that things are gradually starting to change at last. You can get a Honda Ridgeline in the US now, those aren’t r...

Bad news: our main sewer line got blocked up somehow. Good news: there’s a nice easy access cover. Bad news: it was buried under snow and I didn’t know where it was. Good news: it was only buried under a small amount of snow, not the waist-high drift at the side of the house. The plumber managed to find it, and we didn't have to have him remove the toilet. Bad news: the problem started around 5pm so we have to pay after hours rates.
