This can't be the intended "downloading" animation in Tahoe's TV.app…

I opened up Apple Maps' search box and its new ads suggested I go to JetBlue Airways, the JetBlue terminal at JFK airport 39 miles away. I opened up Google Maps' search box, and 100% of the screen space is devoted to my presets (Home/Work/etc.) and my Recent searches. Apple continues to embarrass itself with its shitty ad plays. In the meantime, I'll keep using Google Maps, because it's just *better*, and — something I never thought I'd say — it respects me more as the use...

Apple Business' new free MDM sounds great! Exactly what I need to manage Overcast's transcriber Mac Minis! Let me just sign up here, and… 🤯 They made ANOTHER review process? How long is THIS one going to take?!

App Store review delays are back to Shoemaker-era levels. Most app reviews seem to be taking 6+ days now — a momentum-crushing delay for a process that has reliably taken 1–3 days for the last 10 years. And this has NOT been a gradual increase since the rise of AI coding across the whole year — it came on suddenly, starting around a month ago. Something over there is on fire, badly neglected, or deeply broken. (Probably all three.) Something has to give. This is unsustainable.

Rotating a photo in 90-degree increments has GOT to be one of the most common actions people take with their iPhone photos… And yet: - Photos on the phone: Multiple taps, buried in an edit mode, and the whole photo has to slowly “load” first - Photos on the Mac: Command-R on the grid is VERY slow to execute, gives no feedback, and often drops repeated Cmd-Rs instead of queuing them Does everyone at Apple just get photo orientation right on the first try, every time? Why is this so bad?

RE: https://macaw.social/@mergesort/117028134501402148 My position on AI coding has evolved a lot since Fable's release. It’s an INCREDIBLY powerful tool for developers. Like every developer tool, if used by shitty programmers (or shitty people), it can create shitty software that does shitty things. But in good, conscientious hands, it’s shockingly effective at making great software even greater, accelerating the development of more great software, and lowering the bar for more people t...

RE: https://mstdn.social/@chrisvasselli/116657333917391076 Why stop at 2 ads in App Store search results? Why not just eliminate the organic search results entirely and show ONLY ads for all search and browse pages, thereby forcing developers to pay for EVERY new customer? THAT's the Apple way! (If you think this is a ridiculous exaggeration… is it? How many ads will be above the organic results in 5 more years, and what percentage of customers will ever scroll past them?) (Ternus,...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@stroughtonsmith/116676088107469940 Some design languages make it really difficult, or outright impossible, to implement "good" versions of common UI patterns and needs. My biggest request for the 27 OSes: Tweak the Liquid Glass system design to let us create better UIs with it, rather than needing to opt out of it. This means: - No text is blurry, ever. Blurry text == bad design. - Navigation bars and toolbars don't need to blur the con...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@stroughtonsmith/116545164468952303 I really like SwiftUI. It just still has a lot of missing or incomplete functionality, and Apple doesn’t seem to be in much of a rush to fill in the gaps. I sometimes wonder how much better macOS could be today if they’d never tried to make the iPad into a Mac replacement, and had focused on maintaining and improving just one great PC-class OS.

One year ago, I made my first custom 3D-printed bracket with TinkerCAD to hold temperature sensors. Today I'm printing custom parts I made in Onshape, with nice fillets and chamfers, using a tungsten-carbide hardened hot-end, support-interface filament for clean support removal, a smooth plate for a flat bottom surface, and glue for easy removal with zero plate damage. I've come a long way in this hobby in a year! (It's so fun. And it's my only hobby I can&#...

I love when someone puts a HUGE amount of engineering and design into their app — far more than the market demands, rewards, or even notices — purely because they care a LOT about it. I strive to do that for podcasts. @_Davidsmith does it for WALKING. Which you might do. And hiking, which is just walking. The new Pedometer++ hides a world-class hiking app behind what you thought was a simple step counter. Check it out. It's truly a hidden gem in the App Store. https://david-smith.o...
