It's interesting how much official translation can modify a story. No, I do not mean to the extent Ghost Stories did. That is funny, but quite different from just translating.

Those mass surveillance laws assholes are pushing for. Do they just enjoy human suffering that much or is someone paying them for it? Blatant disregard for constitutional rights and research/studies alike. They're either grossly incompetent or deliberately malicious and I want to know why.

Well what do you know chat, someone did follow the money (at least 3 different news sources mentioned in wiki). Why are they still in their position with blatant conflicts of interest? source: https://brot.eus/objects/47e0e839-524d-4966-b541-c6c0ad0c9ab7 @grillchen

@vie@hachyderm.io It's worth noticing that the ones most enthusiastic about it are also the ones that care the least about their craft and were only ever in it because it was a well-paying job (in some places, they wouldn't have chosen it otherwise). That's not a coincidence.

@waldoj@mastodon.social @dalias@hachyderm.io Amazon should pay for the datacenters nearly or indeed in full. They should be glad to contribute to society for once, instead of merely profiting off feeding on it.

@degroof@mastodon.social Which is barely true (especially comparatively) if they're still built without sprinklers that would prevent the entire building from igniting and therefore reduce the actual use by easily a magnitude. But I'm sure he doesn't want to hear about proper planification and preparation for harm reduction. Besides which their primary function isn't being on fire.

@evacide@hachyderm.io And still proprietary garbage that restricts the user's freedom, too.

Hmmm... has anyone made something to rip stuff off webtoons? Because fuck using their proprietary malware.

Reminder that the phrase "without any significant artistic merit" is completely meaningless as there is no such thing as objective determination of artistic worth. It's just blanket censorship for "thing we do not like" where usually the goal is to discriminate against some group or other.

How many mappings does the average IOMMU controller support? Do such mappings include registers and interrupts? Is it unreasonable to think every Linux driver should be in its own isolated kernel thread without access to anything else?
-

> The kernel incorrectly “copies” (or rather, aliases) a readable page into a writable context without proper privilege checks. I can't help but feel like this should have been represented in the type of the page. It's also a clear example of why Linux's permission model is catastrophically weaker than capabilities.

@kubikpixel @ublockorigin @noscript @privacybadger @libredirect I think this is actually illegal in a lot of places.

I really would like if batteries got a bit cheaper. I'm so close to no longer having to care about power outages that last only an hour or so chat... The technology is real, I just need to be able to afford it.

Far too many people ignore the ethical issues. Where did that ridiculous disregard for ethics so long as the product is "good" (it's not but nevermind that) come from? It's appalling especially from people that call themselves engineers.

You know, it seems kind of hypocritical of Altman to complain someone tried to molotov or shootup his home when the tool he irresponsibly provides has been used to coordinate violence several times. What goes around comes around, it's only fair.

nfs-ganesha supposedly supports 9p. This is the only documentation to be found. None of the manpages mention it.

Sometimes, the error messages really are telling the truth. I had forgotten the Wireguard persistent keepalive, it was in fact losing connection.

@SmudgeTheInsultCat Technically, under the very broad antiterrorism laws of the land? What they did was in fact illegal (and those laws have some funny aspects regarding rights). They will never face charges under that though. I'm sure there are less generic and abusably-written ones that were broken too, though. As for the compliance of the population? Yeah. It is bewildering, especially from the "land of guns", as it were.

So, all the nonsense with LLM psychosis and complete abandoning of self-respect & reliability, is it standalone or does it relate to COVID brain? A lot of the pertinent takes (that don't fall under ELIZA effects) seem feverishly delusional.

I wonder how much of a hassle it'd be to take DeltaChat's pipe server thing and make an Emacs client...

Company finances should be required to go through an escrow that, at any time, always has enough money in it to cover the wages of the current employees. So that if the company goes bankrupt, it can't also steal the wages of the workers.

I think one antipattern I *hate* that I first noticed with Amazon is showing elements on a page... that 404 or otherwise don't work until dozens of seconds after the rest of the page has already finished loading. How the fuck do you fail so hard at frontend dev?

Yeah actually, people that deny the rights of others online tend to be inclined to do the same in person if they think they can get away with it. That shouldn't be surprising chat. "Touching grass" (lol no such thing in winter or car-dependent hellscapes) doesn't necessarily help unless you mainly interact with completely out-of-touch types.

So, Gentoo did the right thing. NetBSD mostly? I guess? Bit worse than Gentoo's. I wonder which others have done the right thing. Neat as Gentoo might be, I don't really want to have to switch everything over to it.

@quinn@social.circl.lu @mattblaze@federate.social It annoys me because they're mostly wrong. Mass automated surveillance happens to everyone (this is literally the whole point of automating it). They just haven't been hit by the acute consequences yet personally.

I've actually spent a ridiculous amount of time tying this sort of thing into Emacs for my own uses. Doing something ad-hoc that should've been baked into everything from the start such that I wouldn't even have to think about it. It's okay if some things are just... generally distributed as a stripped down container that barely has enough information embedded within to know how to decode the rest of the data without having to literally start guessing. (Sometimes this means it...
