Happy Stanislav Petrov day! Today marks 43 years since Petrov decided to wait for confirmation before escalating a missile alert up the chain of command in the Soviet Air Defense, preventing nuclear war. A hero for not trusting automated systems fully. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Soviet_nuclear_false_alarm_incident?wprov=sfti1

The sudden appearance of AI regulation bills in the U.S. are regulatory capture by the big AI companies. Basically Anthropic and OpenAI creating legislative hurdles to keep startups out of their business.

U.S. pulls only 0.4 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for the week ending September 11, taking it down to 285 mmb. This is only a third of last week's 1.2 mmb, which was already not much. The U.S. uses about 20.6 million barrels a day. We used to pull 10 mmb a week, so the tiny pull last week means we may have hit the functional bottom of the SPR, which is thought to be between 250 - 300 mmb. https://www.spr.doe.gov/dir/dir.html

One of the tools we're happiest to own is a rolling magnetic sweeper. Every time we have workmen come to the house we find nails on the driveway with it.

Everything is nice and calm as Iran considers the U.S. peace proposal. It's a good thing the U.S. Administration likes to lay low and be calm over the weekends, we wouldn't want any psychotic self-dealing lunacy on a Saturday.

When I go jogging I look so awful that people yell encouragement at me. “Don’t give up! You got this!” I’ve been jogging for 20 years.

Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony. “The most fossil fuel-friendly government in recent U.S. history has shown us all just how risky reliance on oil and gas can be — and taught the world that true energy security lies in accelerating toward a cleaner, electrified future.” https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/01/opinion/oil-crisis-iran-electric-solar.html?unlocked_article_code=1.XlA.240k.MpkE9q5FNDiG&smid=nytcore-ios-share

If we want ICE out of the airport and the TSA funded, don’t fly. Don’t buy a plane ticket.

“The Treasury Department on Friday temporarily lifted sanctions on Iranian oil that is currently at sea, authorizing it to be sold to most countries…lifting the sanctions would add about 140 million barrels of crude to the oil market.” So at $100 / barrel, that’s $14 billion. Or in Shahed drones ($50K) that’s 280,000 drones.

My niece comes to the U.S. most years from Europe to visit her grandfather. This year she was stopped at the airport, taken into an interrogation room, accused of being a prostitute, had her phone taken and scanned, and released. You know, in case you were wondering why tourism to the U.S. is down.
