Gute Nacht. Ich bin müde.

When I drive a car without a valid driver's license, proof of insurance or tag/license plate, I get stopped by the police, my car will be towed and I can either walk home or might end up in jail and face severe fines, a probation period and loss of my driver's license. When Microsoft runs 45 gas turbines without a state permit, they get 45 days to fix it and a $1.07M fine (which is petty cash for an operation this size) and don't even have to power down the turbines. https://www.th...

For MacOS users (in the EU): Go to Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy, switch that ON to get access to the settings, go to Siri and now you can disable Writing Assistance and a bunch of other "AI" features. You can even disable Siri altogether. Why is it hidden there? I don't know.

Something someone said years ago that stuck with me (as a Dutchie living in Germany) because its is depressingly true but also helps to find real friends and allies: "The Germans’ biggest talent is to be able to find problems in every proposed solution." ;)

With a bit of luck, some of those journalists losing White House access will recognise that their true calling isn’t a comfy seat in the chocolate factory and that they can use their new found freedom to connect to more sources in the Trump galaxy that have grudges after being treated in bad ways and we will soon see hard-hitting reports that will finally end his rule. #AlwaysTheOptimist

This is a link to an article written by someone else, not me: "I tried building my startup entirely on European infrastructure. Here's the stack I landed on, what was harder than expected, and what you still can't avoid." https://www.coinerella.com/made-in-eu-it-was-harder-than-i-thought/ We need more stories like this being shared in the open. You can criticise some parts of the decisions made here, but that's not the point. Someone tried, learned and shares the result....

If "AI" is so dangerous as the bosses of Big AI are telling us, the solution is very simple. Make AI illegal, establish a global moratorium and stop all plans for "AI" datacenters while dismantling the ones that already exist. But I somehow have a gut feeling that is not what is going to happen ;) 1/3

At the core of the global internet are the DNS root servers. These 13 go-to places are at the top of authority when it comes to making sure you can connect to any server with a domain name. What you might not know is that 10 of these 13 root servers are ultimately under US jurisdiction. Should that worry you? I guess not, the current system is quite robust. But I deal in risk assessment and probabilities. And I think this isn't an ideal setup. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_name_server...

PIR, the Public Interest Registry ("Based in Reston, Virginia, Public Interest Registry is a nonprofit organization created by the Internet Society to manage the .ORG domain."), seems to have put autistici.org on status serverHold and that is why you cannot resolve their name anymore. This is what can happen to your .org domain name when the Trump administration decides to add you to the OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) list.

Because there seems to be a bit of confusion. Open Weight LLMs (Large Language Models) is just a fancy word for "models you can download and run locally on your machines". Closed Weight is just a fancy word for MaaS, Models as a Service, that run remotely on machines from the vendor. Hope that helps! Open Source models are a very different topic. It means you not only get the trained model but also (access to) the training data itself. But that is all a bit undefined in reality. 1/2
