@intothewestaway@mastodonapp.uk I was scrolling through CBC Gem's sports offerings, and saw Mackenzie Barwell is doing a thing tomorrow for Canada's pro cricket tournament. Seems OneSoccer/CanPL is contributing not just to the soccer ecosystem, but also to the sports ecosystem more broadly. I do not normally watch cricket, but I'll be checking it out. I'm also impressed that they've organized a pro competition for a sport that is still pretty niche in Canada.

Whenever Trump talks shit about #Canada my reaction is just "Put that on a T-shirt. I'll wear that."

Given Poilievre's obsession with tax cuts to solve every economic problem, you could describe him as mono-maniacal. Given his fixation on slogans, you could also describe him as motto-maniacal.

Poilievre's role in the Harper government was attack dog. I don't think he's able to shake whatever is that made him suitable for that role, and that makes him unsuitable as leader. Why does he look so awkward trying to be Ordinary Guy? Because it's not part of his core persona.

Based on that first poll, I'm somewhat jealous of BC now, seeing the electorate turn on the NDP for their opportunism. Wish Ontario would have done the same to the PCs when Doug Ford called the last election.

The Ontario legislature had 130 seats until 1999, when it dropped to 103 and aligned with the federal riding boundaries. There are now 124 ridings. They no longer align with the federal boundaries, and they're based on population data from 2011, with no indication that they'll be redistributed. #Ontario #Onpoli

Along with the net favourability score, they should publish a 'net familiarity score', calculated as the difference between the percentage of people with a positive or negative view and the percentage of people who don't know.

This was a good weekend for Canadian Rugby. The men's team beat the higher ranked US team. The women's team tied England, having a much better game against them than the Women's Rugby World Cup final, and breaking their 39 game winning streak. #Canada #Cdnsports

One of my free market capitalist takes is that if free market capitalism is so awesome, it shouldn't need incentives. The free market capitalism is supposed to be the incentive!

I don't know if I was living in a bubble before, but it really seems like people stopped stopping at stop signs since, say, 2019. I see the same driver behaviour at the intersection where my kids wait for the school bus. It's a 4 way stop, but even rolling stops can't be counted on.

This is brutal, and it's the 2nd time it happened in a week. Thank goodness nobody was seriously hurt. (The removal of speed cameras and the impending removal of bike lanes also get mentions.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECgM7TvBqNo #Toronto #TOPoli #ONtario #Onpoli

How have the Japanese beetles been in your area? I noticed there there were very noticeably fewer of them this year around here (Lake Simcoe area). I asked my sisters, and one sister, who lives in Brantford, said she has seen very few. No response yet from the other sister. #Ontario

Apple's Macintosh brand (now just Mac) is named after the McIntosh apple. It's one of the USA's most iconic brands. The McIntosh apple is Canada's national apple. It's Canada's national apple because it originated here. Was it Trump who said the USA doesn't need anything from Canada?

RE: https://mstdn.ca/@hewer_of_code/117038058366674843 Well, the bug excitement just doesn't end today. I mowed the lawn this evening, and just I was heading back inside, I spotted something crawling on my milkweed. It was a monarch caterpillar! I was sort of hoping, but not expecting, that growing milkweed would play host to a monarch caterpillar. I mainly just wanted to feed them.

I'm putting people who say things like "an LLM has anxiety because it produces text like someone who does" and people who say things like "an LLM is a compiler because I never look at the code it produces" in the same bin.

I was watching a TV series from 2010 last night, and it was made very clear that the Nazis were villains. Only about 5 years later, that consensus began to unravel.

Just spotted what I think is a tiger bee fly in my yard. Most species of bee fly that I know of are smaller than a typical bee, but this thing was huge, bigger than a horse fly, which was until today the biggest species of fly that I knew of.

Now and then I see some counterarguments to claims that GenAI is harmful to the environment. That would be great if turns out to be true, because it would mean we don't need to compromise on environmental regulations to accommodate people/orgs that want to build AI data centres.

I'm kind of wondering, how much could revival of monarchs be helped just by prioritizing native species in gardens at public spaces.

RE: https://mastodon.me.uk/@Floppy/117007843142581793 I am grateful for this work. I launched my dev career on the framework #Amiko is forked off of. I think it's a very useful framework. As a newcomer to the web development at the time, it made it easy for me to get started, while knowing very little about the underlying technologies, like SQL databases and HTTP. But after the thing that happened in 2021, I have barely spoken its name. The original framework author has only made things w...
