Last night, 21.02 I got a message in our Magic group: "Does your proxy printer support bulk import from Moxfield?" It didn't. 26 minutes later, it did. And today I've been adding a bunch of fun new features too like changing individual arts and supporting more import formats. It was a fun weekend coding.

Three weeks ago, I wrote a little shell script to connect and disconnect my headphones because I got annoyed by having to find right icons and items from the menu bar. (https://notes.hamatti.org/technology/recipes/connecting-my-bluetooth-headphones-with-shell-command) I had no idea it would be this impactful. My quality of life using headphones with my laptop when out and about increased significantly. All with less than 100 lines of code.

I've been going to movies a lot lately as I have a bunch of free tickets. The movie theater experience is supposed to be a great experience โ€” that's what you pay for. But watching 15+ minutes of ads and being limited to over expensive snacks (or sneaking in your own) is just not a great experience compared to watching movies at home. https://hamatti.org/posts/im-not-a-big-fan-of-movie-theater-experience/ #blogging #movies

"So, if you always wanted to but think it isn't worth telling a speaker you liked their talk, this is your encouragement post to do so. It is always worth it even if it is a small tap and small chat. People put a lot of work into it and they want people to enjoy it and, at least for me, I kinda do want to know if we did alright." Yes please! @slowclap@social.smplfi.com Progressive enhancement should be the baseline for building on the web: the basic things like text and forms should be available on basic HTML and then add graphics and Javascript goodies on top for browsers that do support them.

After reading the excellent Spider-Man: Life Story, I picked up Fantastic Four: Life Story which was unfortunately a disappointment. For Spider-Man, growing up from a teenager to adulthood was a much stronger motif and more interesting setting and Fantastic Four felt just like a regular story of the battle against Galactus. Maybe if I had read it before I heard about Spider-Man, I would have enjoyed it more but I can't ignore the differences now. https://notes.hamatti.org/sources/books/fa...

Last weekend I finished reading Spider-Man: Life Story which is an excellent story told through 6 (+1) issues, each telling the story of Spider-Man decade by decade from 1960s to 2010s as Spider-Man grows old. https://notes.hamatti.org/sources/books/spider-man-life-story #Comics #Marvel #SpiderMan

u is for uv Most of my uv usage is running independent scripts or REPL sessions with dependencies. g is for get_or_create Django's get_or_create is great. It lets you search for something in the database and craete it if it didn't exist. It's such a great tool for things like data entry and makes the code nice and easy to read and follow. https://hamatti.org/posts/g-is-for-get-or-create-python-a-to-z/ #Python #Django #Blaugust #Blaugust2026

I'm slow to start my week so often I'm at my best sround Thursday 22 and onwards. It's sometimes bit cumbersome when I start reaching out to people on Thursday night or Friday, right before they start their weekends. I'm happy we have asynchronous means of communication.

Less than 10 days until August and that means the festival of blogging @Blaugust@gamepad.club is right around the corner. I'm participating in it for the 4th time now and have some exciting plans about daily #Python posts coming up. I wrote about blogging, Blaugust and these writing challenges and why I enjoy participating in them. Spoilers: it's largely the community. https://hamatti.org/posts/on-blogging-blaugust-and-challenging-yourself/ #blogging #Blaugust #Blaugust2026

I borrowed this book from library today and I love it. It's a reference book for a ton of different mechanics in board games. It explains the mechanics very well, lists examples of games that use them and give pros, cons and considerations for all of them. It does make a few weird judgements here and there that I found odd but other than those, it's a reference book that I'm planning to add to my bookshelf permanently in the future. #BoardGames #GameDesign #Books

In January, I finally made my first zine and Roll the Zine โ€“ a board and card game fanzine โ€” was born. Yesterday's panel discussion about zines at #Finncon got me thinking about the hobby so I wrote down some initial thoughts after the first 7 months. https://hamatti.org/posts/thoughts-on-making-zines-after-7-months/ #zine #RollTheZine #blogging #blog #BoardGames

To celebrate #Finncon, my zine special edition is now out. In this fifth edition of Roll the Zine, I write about the best scifi board games: the universe is a pretty big place and there's room for love, adventure, business, war and comedy in all of that vastness. https://zine.hamatti.org/issues/5/ #RollTheZine #zine #scifi #BoardGames

In a good world, this would have a potential to be a good thing: less discs created in the world. However, in the current world, this just means that Sony and/or the game developers have more power to decide that the game you purchased won't be available to you anymore and pull it from your library or make it impossible to re-download. So much of modern gaming won't be available in the future in a way that 90s and early 2000s games are today. It makes me very sad. https://blog.plays...

This is super cool: Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle has published a ton of audio effects with a good permissive license. > The Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle is Finland's public broadcaster and holds a large audiovisual archive. The archives also contain a great amount of sound effects which have been recorded during the last 70 years using various techniques. https://freesound.org/people/YleArkisto/

I follow a lot of great artists in the internet and their work seems so effortless that I start to dream about illustrating stuff. Then I pick up my sketchbook and some pens and draw a few lines and remember how shit I am.
