Article in the paper about someone who gave up listening to podcasts 24/7, which they said freed up their thought processes and internal monologue. It's something I probably need to do - often listening to stuff for the sake of it rather than cos I'm really paying attention or even properly interested. There's part of me that sees it as a process of learning or self improvement, a dripfeed of information (on history, music, philosophy or politics, depending on the show), making use...

Milan Knizak - broken music composition 1979 https://youtu.be/88ONydyRX7c Recorded in the late 60s, as I understand. A series of recordings made of destroyed and modified records. Sad to hear that he passed away yesterday.

Out for a run round Belgrade. Lovely weather. Seemed rude not to. Soundcheck was 11am and not on stage till midnight, so plenty of time to spend. I dropped my hotel keycard taking my phone out of my pocket to take a photo of this delightful sentry box. Looped back 25mins later and it was still there, phew. #running #castledon #Belgrade #turret #minecraftIdeas

Mammoth Beat Organ rehearsal session from a couple of years ago. Includes a bit with four swannee whistles on a turntable, playing cards in the spokes, and a nice upbeat mechanical-acoustic technoise ending. https://youtu.be/zK6-6ADHM4w #mechanicalMusic #machine #music #noiseMusic #noise

Rehearsing today with Sascha for a live video soundtrack we're doing in September. It went pretty well, I think, and we worked out all the sections we will use. It's a very different way of working for me, and for us as a duo. Typically we would improvise live, perhaps to a loose structure. In recording sessions we have previously just sort of jammed through pieces - improvising around a sound palate or set of textures. We're yet to work out how the soundtrack will fol...

A live drone/noise set from 2017 in which I cycled round a table, adjusting various continuous sound making processes in turn. As such the physical assemblage of the system is also the score which determines the output. Layers of out-of-phase loops from analogue, digital and virtual sound sources: Looping field recording dubplates, walkman with synth drones, analogue synthesizer, laptop running TidalCycles live coding program, analogue modelling digital drum synth triggered by rotating stones (...

When I was at school they taught us how to make circuit boards using Letraset, ultraviolet light and an acid bath. (It was completely weird and mysterious to me at the time, I had no concept of why anyone would want to do it). Making a single circuit board or a couple of copies. I'm assuming nowerdays there's a way to do this more easily - either with some element of digital fabrication at home or sending off to a fab lab of some sort. I wouldn't know what to even search...

Very kind review of my new album in The Quietus. It's nice when someone has properly taken time to listen to something you've made. Interesting to me what bits he focused on and the comparisons he made to other artists. https://thequietus.com/quietus-reviews/graham-dunning-quern-review/

I'm finally getting round to putting together a "how to get started on Mastodon" blog post for all the people I've been recommending the platform to. I could do with links to good server directories, if anyone knows of any they would recommend.

I'm most excited to share the technical video which shows all the new stuff I made during the PhD. Some eurorack modules, sequencing discs and switches, and mechanical small percussion. The video shows how each of them works with short examples. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBhGbHVQYvI #making #eurorack #modular #synths #turntable #sequencer #mechanicalTechno #mechanicalMusic #machine

PhD Thesis: Mechanical Techno: extended turntable as live assemblage My PhD has now been approved by university, so I can now share my thesis and the media that goes along with it.
