Another #autumn #hiking in the #PNW thread. Started with a hike up Crystal Peak, which has this excellent view of Mt Rainier, right in your face, with a lot of new snow on it (and there was a bit on the trail too). Crystal Peak is inside Mt Rainier National Park, East of the Mountain and just South of the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort. That's the White River running down the valley there, it joins the Puyallup and empties into Puget Sound at Tacoma. 1/7

Took a walk today and looked at parking strips (verges, hell strips, whatever). Photo 1 is your typical. Photos 2 & 3 show a parking strip that has reached its potential. It's all drought tolerant flowering perennials and shrubs. But get this--the second strip isn't any more work to maintain than the first one. Grass is not your lowest maintenance option. Add up the time you spend mowing, fixing & fueling the mower, watering, feeding, weeding, and you'll see. #gardening #Blo...

@Sheril@mastodon.social There's been a mini trend of "classics retold from [some female character]'s perspective". I've read a few and this is best I've read. Her prose lives up to its promise. Have you read Margaret Atwood's Penelopiad?

@dantheclamman@scicomm.xyz Have you read the book "Murderland" by Caroline Fraser? It's about the link between air pollution (lead, arsenic, sulphur dioxide) and the serial killer epidemic in the Pacific Northwest in the 50s -80s. It's not a scientific book, but the correlation is pretty eye opening. https://bookshop.org/p/books/murderland-crime-and-bloodlust-in-the-time-of-serial-killers-caroline-fraser/156e2df8d7c9c05c

This weekend I took a trip up to the top of Baker Lake, in the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington, fed by snow and glacier melt of one of our 4 active volcanoes, Kulshan or Mt Baker (just look at the color of that water!) It's a fantastic time to hike along the river and lakeshore, the trees haven't fully leafed out and there's a lot of life happening on the forest floor. Plant-heavy thread ahead. 1/9 #PNW #nativeplants #hiking #getoutside #mountains

EvErYtHinG is blOoMinG. I took a 20 minute walk around my neighborhood yesterday and collected these photos just on my street. Let's make a quiz game out of it. See how many you can identify. They start easy and get harder. Answers in the alt text. A short thread. #bloomscrolling #gardening @gardening 1/6

It's not exactly a #bigfoot sighting, but maybe the next closest thing.... I saw a mountain beaver! They're not actually beavers, but a kind of "living fossil" rodent that's found only in the #PNW. I've been been hiking #Washington for literally decades, and known about them for almost that long, but this is the first time I've actually laid eyes on one. And yes like all good #cryptid photos these are blurry. #WildLife #wildlifephotography

I probably won't brave the crowds at the University of Washington quadrangle to see their cherry trees this year, but I don't really need to. There's plenty to see in my neighborhood. #gardening #PNW #seattle #Bloomscrolling #spring
