RE: https://aus.social/@firstdogonthemoon/117359018665614273 I found a little bogong this morning, near the grevillea pot on my balcony :blobcatheart:

My dog, Chase, moved into my new place today. So far he has inspected the rubbish bins, rolled on his back on the carpet (his last house had a tiled floor), been for two walks to the park, played with new toys, and marvelled at the tennis court off my balcony. #Canberra #bulldog #AustralianBulldog

Chase and I are currently in a war over who has ownership of the good armchair. This is how I stop him getting it when I’m not using it. Feel free to explain what thoughts are going through his head in the second picture.

On Friday afternoon I got to see inside a Mongolian Ger, learn Tibetan dance, and watch traditional Tibetan calligraphy as part of ANU’s Immersia program. And last night, thukpa (veggie noodle soup) and momos (steamed or fried veggie dumplings served with hot chilli sauce) for dinner from Momos: Taste of Tibet, a takeaway around the corner from where I live in Braddon. I think a lot about how many families - including my own on my dad’s side - have lived as shepherds, moving through the landsc...

At this exact moment 19 years ago, my youngest child arrived into the world. He’s still got the cheeky smile and wild hair he had as a toddler. Sunday is a celebration of the caring, creative, courageous young man he is today.

I am once again spending my Sunday afternoon reading meeting papers about governance and financial management. But this time, thankfully, it's for a policy committee that I volunteer for, and not Cabinet.

I have two phones. The one I only turn on once a week to check WhatsApp groups I’m in (and I’ve forgotten to even do that for weeks), which will stay off for the AusAlert check because it isn’t used in emergencies anyway. And my daily use phone, which is staying on so I will definitely get an AusAlert in the event of a disaster like the emus reprosecuting the Emu War of 1932. I would be on the side of the emus, they should justifiably be running Parliament seeing as there’s one of them with th...

2 degrees is not enough degrees to get out from under the doona, and yet I have to drive a kid to their work and then go to my own work. At least I work indoors and have a heater, and an unlimited boiling water tap for making tea.

I want to sign up to an email newsletter for a venue that has the kind of shows I like to go to, but they only publish to commercial social media and their own website. No newsletter, no RSS feed for the What's On page on their website. Guess this means I won't be buying tickets to any of their shows.

Every day, I wake up with a tune stuck on loop in my head, and the only way to get it out is to listen to the whole song and then listen to something else at random. I don't think the songs are my subconscious telling me anything, it's probably just a couple of notes from a chord that wakes a memory of a tune I've heard before, something like that. Very annoying when I can't listen to music to break the loop though.

I just heard the geese complaining outside. Not enough to make me think "foxes!" but enough to make me think they regret their choice to not go into their enclosure at sunset. I wonder if this means they'll go into the enclosure tomorrow night?

The thought occupying my mind as I went to sleep last night: if I plug my SNES emulator into my old iMac via USB, will the iMac work as a display for the SNES? (I know it won’t work. But I can wish.)

You know the internet is not what we dreamt of in the mid 90s when Google rolls out a new AI note taking feature and you’re pleased that it defaults to not being switched on.

Today I tried out a chai shop I’ve only recently heard exists near my office. It makes excellent proper brewed chai to order. And sadly, it is closing to move to another suburb. So that was my first and last order. Also nice about today’s visit is that the young fella who made my chai was excited to do a course in train / tram conducting recently, which is a job he would very much like to be doing.

Beautifully written explanation of why Europe’s heatwave must not be normalised, whether it’s to “but that’s every summer in Australia” or to “I guess this is just what summer will be like in Europe from now on”. There is still time to mitigate some level of climate change, and we don’t want to waste that opportunity with apathy and inertia. #heatwave #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis France Is Hotter Than the Sahara. Re: heatwaves in Europe… it’s not just that their buildings are not equipped for temperatures that are normal in Australia. They also have higher humidity levels, so the methods we use to cool down in a dry climate are more effective at heat management than they would be in a climate with more moisture in the air.

If you’re in Canberra today and want the voices of disabled people heard on the truly awful cuts to NDIS, come to the rally at Parliament at 2pm. I’ll see you there! Lots of other ways to take action listed on the page, and protests in other cities today. #NDIS #disability #autistic #neurodivergent #Canberra #auspol #Budget2026 https://www.greenleft.org.au/2026-05/event/national-day-action-protect-our-ndis-canberra

Another very nice Crux newsletter from @daedalus@eigenmagic.net today. When I first read about the Axon Bluetooth security fails in tasers used by Australian police, it felt like something from a satire on modern infosec and government purchasing decisions. And yet, here we are. With nobody telling police officers that they are trackable using the very weapons they so often carelessly use on citizens.

During the COVID emergency period 2021 and 2022, I was one of the ACT Ministers making Cabinet decisions about public health regulations. Every day for 67 consecutive days, there was at least one Cabinet meeting, sometimes two meetings on the same day, including on weekends. We were given briefs with the evidence base for why certain regulations could reduce transmission and save lives, and the differences in new variants as they emerged. Now I know where some of that data came from. Thank you...

Lovely morning at Mawson with Andrew Braddock, Sam Carter, and my friend Emad. And I’ve run out of flyers thanks to some very pleasant post-stall letterboxing on this fine Sunday. If you also want to see north Tuggeranong and south Woden friends jump on light rail from Mawson park & ride or bike & ride, reducing cars on the road by thousands more each day, you can sign the petition here: https://epetitions.parliament.act.gov.au/details/e-pet-081-25 #actpol #trains #canberra

On Friday night, about 3am, I woke up to see flashing emergency lights through the bedroom window. I hadn't heard any sirens. But I could see that there was a fire truck and ambulance a few doors down the street. I know most of the neighbours, lots of elderly and disabled folk live in our street, so of course I worried. Next morning we found out that an elderly neighbour had died in a house fire around 1:30am. Immensely sad. Her family and friends will miss her terribly.

Final update from my study trip to India… Last Saturday, after flying from Dharamsala back to Delhi, I spent some time at Mughal Emperor Humayun’s tomb. Built in 1558-1570AD by his widow Empress Bega Begum, it was inspired by Persian tombs (in present-day Iran) and constructed in red sandstone and white marble. It included buildings to house up to 300 Persian visitors at a time, spring-fed water channels dividing the 30 acre site into 16 squares that water the gardens and cool the air. The tomb...
