On Friday afternoon I got to see inside a Mongolian Ger, learn Tibetan dance, and watch traditional Tibetan calligraphy as part of ANU’s Immersia program. And last night, thukpa (veggie noodle soup) and momos (steamed or fried veggie dumplings served with hot chilli sauce) for dinner from Momos: Taste of Tibet, a takeaway around the corner from where I live in Braddon. I think a lot about how many families - including my own on my dad’s side - have lived as shepherds, moving through the landscape with their flock. The shelter we construct and what we eat respond to the climate in which we live, but there is still so much familiarity in a life that is tied so closely to weather, cycles of growth and renewal, and family. The world feels smaller-scale and more human-centred when I have opportunities to understand how people live and that we hold so many shared values.
