Having a few people over for my birthday this weekend. I gave them the options for some games to play, but they overwhelmingly chose to do a Battletech Grinder. I don’t have the right mix of mechs for that “small” grinder set. So I put together my own small list, taking from the large grinder pdf and favoring ones I had painted. 35 out of 40 are painted. I just had the Mountain Lake map printed so we’ll use that. Very much looking forward to blasting mechs. #Battletech #WarGames

Apparently there’s yet another edition of Vampire (the RPG) in the works. I never even looked at the last edition. Ever since they sold out to a video game company the RPG stuff has mostly felt like an afterthought placeholder to keep the IP alive. Once a game is controlled by corporate interests instead of creative talent, there’s just no long term vision. Licenses get cancelled or transferred, based on the whims of some distant board of directors. 1/3 #TTRPG #Vampire #Mage #Changeling #WoD

I have this dream of running a Battle for Tukayyid event. As part of it I’d have 10 mechs for each invading clans as a pool for them to deploy from. First step was taking the ~16 mechs I already have painted Jade Falcon green (some need touch up, I got some partially painted 2nd hand) and making a Clan Invasion era roster from them. How does this look? #BattleTech #ClanInvasion #BattleForTukayyid #ClanJadeFalcon #JadeFalcon

How can you tell if a book is abridged? I got a used copy of Moby Dick, and it’s only 420 pages long. A lot of other editions are twice that. It is 6x9 in, so bigger pages a paperback. Great Books of the Western World, Encyclopædia Britannica, University of Chicago, 1952. Which I’m realizing was 101 years after the original was published. Anyway, I decided to finally tackle this classic because my father read it recently and I want something to talk about next time I see him. #MobyDick

I voted. We’ll see how that goes.

Have you ever heard of the trolley problem? You mean back in ‘42 when we tried to build a trolley and all the workers disappeared? No. No. What? No. #WidowsBay

I need some interesting magic items to give my group. I must admit, Nimble’s sample magic items are very few and not the best. I want to give them some useful utility items that won’t break the game but will expand their options. #TTRPG #GMPrep #Nimble #NimbleRPG #DND #ADND #NSR #OSR #MagicItems #OutlawsOfTheNorth

I’m planning on running B5 Horror on the Hill for my nimble group. I’m changing it up a bit, and running it in Nimble. Anyone revisit this old module? Stuff they particularly liked or had to absolutely change? I’m removing the slide to the deeper dungeon, I’ll make another entrance they can find later. #TTRPG #DND #BX #OSR #NSR #HorrorOnTheHill #ADND #B5 #OutlawsOfTheNorth

Outlaws of the North My group is headed to Imperial Hill next session, named for the old fort on the hill when this was the old border of the empire hundreds of years ago. What are some interesting places to see there? Fun facts? Signature produce? It does sit in the middle of Marsanne wine country. #TTRPG #Nimble #NimbleRpg #GMPrep #NSR #OSR #DnD #Sandbox

Because another designer recently put out an RPG called Violence, the NSR discord started talking about Violence by Designer X from 1999. Turns out it was re-released via CC-NC-SA. So everyone should read this work of art. It is satire, from the guy who brought you Paranoia. “What Is a Roleplaying Game? Brother, if you don’t know, this is not the place to start.” http://www.costik.com/Violence%20RPG1.pdf #TTRPG #OSR #NSR #Satire #Paranoia #ParanoiaRpg #GregCostikyan

Took a political survey and it had a terribly worded question about science. Who are “the people running the scientific community”? There isn’t a single board of directors in charge of science. Am I confident in scientists? Yes. Am I confident our current government will fund any actual science? Absolutely not. They don’t want to know the truth about Climate Change. Also noted, how many women did they list as potential democratic candidates for president?!? #Democracy #Fascism #USPol

Teen Wolf [TV] I’vd been watching Teen Wolf, and it’s a silly show at times. But all of their parents nominally make an appearance here and there. Except Malia’s step-father, who hasn’t been around since the two part episode that introduced her. #TeenWolf

The King in Yellow The Street of the First Shell Chambers manages to capture the horror of World War One. Except this was written twenty years before that, and instead about the Franco-Prussian War. While he wasn’t there for the siege of Paris, he certainly would have met many who loved through it. #Reading #Horror #Chambers #RobertChambers #KingInYellow

Officially, D&D did not adopt individual initiative until 3rd edition. But I feel like it was a very common house rule at the time. Certainly every other rpg I played in the 80s did it (Rolemaster, Palladium Fantasy, Warhammer FRP, Talislanta). Was individual initiative a common house rule in AD&D? #TTRPG #DND #ADND #OSR In the 80s I played:

Scouring Sands Sortie 11 A rough match. We stormed the enemy base, but our King Crab, Fire Moth, and Blackjack went down to do it. We also lost too foot points of local troops who bravely helped locate the enemy thumpers. Great game. Our mechs were salvageable, but two named pilots are wounded and will miss the next mission. @Sparkrdom #Battletech #ScouringSands #AlphaStrike #SwedesSwords

Someone else had probably noticed this before, but I was stuck in traffic next to a ~~cyber~~ fascist truck today. It felt like the matrix was glitching and rendering a low poly count model up close instead of a high res one.

Last call for the Psi*Run second edition KS. I’ve run the first edition several times and it’s a lot of fun. Awaken your psychic powers and escape from those who are hunting you! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1179631078/psirun-second-edition #TTRPG #StoryGames #PbtA #MegueyBaker #PsiRun

Someone said that “if you can run Keep on the Borderlands with it, it’s OSR”. I’m pretty sure that’s not true. I of course immediately tried to think of the most story game way to run B2. My first thought is reverse B2 using No Country for Old Kobolds. What’s the most indie way you would run the classic Keep on the Borderlands? #TTRPG #OSR #NSR #PBtA #StoryGames #IndieRpgs #KeepOnTheBorderlands

Its weird absorbing Battletech lore mostly through short stories. My actual knowledge of history is mostly Clan War from video games/vague memories, and IlClan from recent sourcebooks. My knowledge of the timeline looks like: War Star League War Clan Invasion War Jihad? War Clan Invasion 2 Peace at last? Just kidding, War. #Battletech #War #Reading #ClanInvasion #IlClan

A conversation about AD&D, and how the character to-hit matrices were in the DMG, which was “Dungeon Master Only!” material. I know by the 1986 character sheet product it included a spot for THAC0. I’m curious what the early AD&D sheets looked like. I think the 80s version of the PHB had a record sheet, but I’m uncertain. Anyone know where I can find a scan of these sheets: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permanent_Character_Folder_%26_Adventure_Records #TTRPG #DND #ADND #O...

Watching the most recent season of For All Mankind. Another friend finds the show boring, and I can see that. There isn’t a lot of action, it’s a slow drama. But it’s just right for me. The tension is mostly political, but I’m here for it. #ForAllMankind #FreeMars #SciFi

Enjoying my re-read of The King in Yellow. I would say Chambers is better than Lovecraft. It’s making me want to pick up an Ambrose Bierce collection, for how much Chambers referenced him. #Reading #Chambers #Bierce #TheKingInYellow

Despite have an extra two weeks without game, I am ill prepared for tonight’s session. Just been too busy with life stuff to prepare. Hopefully I can prep enough to make things interesting. Stupid cat woke me at 6am so I’m currently sleep deprived however. I’ll try and sneak a nap after this status meeting. #TTRPG #GMPrep #OutlawsOfTheNorth
